If you find the new search results in 4.2 overwhelming because you're used to the old search which was basically just hashtags and full-text searches of your own toots - add "from:<username>" to your search.

Eg, searching "from:Andres4NY year ago" is very similar to just a search for "year ago" on Mastodon 4.1.

But now with the fuller text search, you can search for other people's toots as well. Like, maybe I remember @NewNordicNormal giving me a suggestion but I don't have it in my notifications any more. "from:NewNordicNormal@c.im phone" does the trick.

Screenshot of the search for from:NewNordicNormal@c.im phone" (in phanpy's interface rather than stock mastodon web ui) showing the result being a toot from NNN talking about a phone failing SafetyNet.

Phanpy doesn't do it (and probably most apps don't, either), but if you go to your instances web interface and just click on the search bar, it'll show you the various options for refining your searches. Date ranges, poll-specific search, etc.

Like, maybe (For Science!) I want to know about all the polls that feature the word "fart"? "has:poll fart" will tell you.

The mastodon search bar, with a bunch of stuff underneath showing that options include "from: user", "before: specific date", "has: media, poll, or embed", and so on.

Fart polls. The first one is by a guy named Terence who starts the poll with, "Well, I've farted around enough with my blog.."

The second one is by liza, asking people what the collective noun is for a group of reply guys. The last entry in the poll is "fart".

@stux @Iragersh Yeah, we moved providers (significantly upgrading machine resources in the process) before switching to 4.2, expecting the full-text search would be too much for the old machine.
