@TechConnectify I'd argue that the same desires that lead to "algorithmic complacency" as you've called it, are those that made TV feel so much different when you could just turn on the tube, switch to some station, and watch whatever was on, very little choice or effort required. There's certainly a part of me that misses that. Same with tuning into a radio station and hearing new music. There is an aspect of discovery, like browsing a thrift store and finding what you did not expect.

I recently started to hate YouTube recommeding things for me especially after watching just 1 thing that might be slightly related to something i might have watched. I hate the tracking and recommendations.

@TechConnectify Watched this video through #invidious because #YouTube managed to cripple #FreeTube ( a Free / #libre youtube app which does not have recommendation algorithm ) but the only live invidious instance was able to circumvent the issue and now it sort of works.

If Technology Connections will start a #PeerTube I would be so happy.

I tremendously enjoy your silly videos about weird and obsolete tech, but this one hits on a very different level.
I absolutely share your concern about a future where our thinking is goverened by algorithms nobody really understands anymore (I just watched Joe Scott's TMI video this morning where he mentions that he knows one of the engineers at Youtube who are responsible for working on the algorithm, and that not even they understand it in full anymore).
This is the reason why I hang out here on Mastodon. This is the reason why I don't use other social media. I subscribe to Youtube channels I like through their feeds (I import them into my RSS reader and follow them in this manner, so I never even have to interact with the recommendations Youtube pushes on me).

I am incredibly concerned about the developments in society over the last 15 years or so since algorithmic curation of content has become widespread. This can lead to all kinds of dangerous developments, including the rise of very questionable figures into positions of power because they are not ashamed to exploit the algorithms to further their own agenda.

Thank you very much for making this video. I'm sure I'll watch it again, probably many more times. But I think now I have to get away from the screen and go outside to get some fresh air. As important this is to think about, it's also really heavy and depressing.

@TechConnectify after watching: this is one of the main reasons I try to have as little accounts as possible.
Most things I need I host myself, even for YouTube I use Invidious, Newpipe or Freetube (which for sure puts me in the "not subscribed" statistics) and just support creators I follow on patreon or by buying merch from time to time.
I also understand that not many people can go that far.
And I also notice that it's difficult for some friends to curate their own feed.

@TechConnectify My problem with YouTube's subscriptions page is that it appears to have no control over marking whether you are done with something or want to leave it in the list for later (if it's something you need to be in the mood for).

RSS readers can do this easily, and I use that to 'triage' my lists all the time. YouTube's way of displaying whether things have new content seems really arbitrary and unhelpful.

But that's probably in the bit you cut for time.

@TechConnectify I like the premise, and I think this is why some older people don't understand new software interfaces. We designed them to be like physical interfaces before and now the more "intuitive" interface designs from younger coders who grew up without physical interfaces.

With a one minute timer (and no specialized knowledge), I managed to get as far as the model 15, knew I was in the right ballpark because it had the same footprint but a different faceplate, but I unpaused the video to check if you were going to provide the answer to the "quiz" before allotting any more time to that rabbit hole (which you did).

And after listening to that preface, I had a feeling that you were going to express an opinion that I agreed with (which is one of the reasons I'm on this platform).

I cannot count how many people have gotten upset at me for saying I don't have an opinion on something.

If I don't possess enough knowledge about something to have an *informed* opinion on something, I don't have an opinion on it at all. So many people in this "New World" have difficulty understanding that.

Oh, brother, your video gets into exactly my gripes with today's internet, apps and AI, saying more in half an hour than I could explain in 4 hours.

Day-by-day, the Internet is becoming less about surfing it or sailing it, but more like a lazy river where people simply lie back and are taken by the current, being told what to be interested in.

It's why I'm on #Mastodon to begin with. And thanks for the Canada shout-out against these BS annexation threats.
