@wonkothesane I'll be real with you: this platform needs both better tools for those with large accounts and it needs a culture which isn't quite so trigger-happy to push popular accounts off the platform.

There are frictions here which are very hard to understand for the majority of its users.

Föderation EN So 23.02.2025 01:44:59

@TechConnectify @pol_9000 I think Pol was being snarky. In some ways because Mastodon is harder to use that makes it a better platform.

That said, Mastodon is very much a labor of love. You had said computing is a solved problem, yet here is a very real problem that needs to be addressed: Making a usable decentralized social media platform! There's no large money interests developing it, and that's one of the reasons why it is difficult to use.

🅱🅻🆄🅴🅱️

Föderation EN Sa 22.02.2025 19:28:36

@TechConnectify @wonkothesane

Little confused when you say culture that isn't trigger happy to push big creators off the platform.

So from my perspective, I have shared your video in two places and star'd the post.

I don't have optics on any aggressive actions towards you, but I'm also not looking THAT hard. In what ways are people trying to push you off?

🅱🅻🆄🅴🅱️

Föderation EN Sa 22.02.2025 20:54:24

@oldgeek

Ah, I didn't realize there was more that he had spoken about.

That is one thing (of many) I am frustrated by with social media. The sort of disjointed nature of it. He had made the arguments in the past, but it wasn't in THAT post.

alcinnz

Föderation EN So 23.02.2025 00:18:56

@BlueBee @oldgeek I'll remark that I've seen someone (can't recall who) *explicitly* state that the goal was to chase him off for being a popular YouTuber.

That prompted me to state: This is not on!

🅱🅻🆄🅴🅱️

Föderation EN So 23.02.2025 00:31:20

@alcinnz @oldgeek

I'm not sure what else can be done except begin regulating posts, but a central regulator is obviously bad. Too much power in too few hands.

I think we should probably have our own review structure of people kind of like steam does for games. But you get to say who's reviews you trust and you ignore everyone else's.

Where you and me and other people can say if we trust someone or not and then if you trust them their opinion of people affects the trust levels of others. And then allow people to be sortable by your personal trust levels for them.

I don't know if I'm explaining that well, but I don't want to spend too much time on it right now. Hopefully it gives the jist of the idea. If someone is a troll, I don't want to see them. But I don't trust a giant corporation to tell me who is and isn't a troll. YouTube surfaced Jordan Peterson to me and that man is an idiot.

So much of the pain people feel reading comments would be alleviated if we had a bit more proof required before allowing people to take up air time. I'm not saying turn people off, but label them differently, trolls shouldn't show up the same as someone who will engage with you with care.

alcinnz

Föderation EN So 23.02.2025 00:32:09

@BlueBee @oldgeek Rate limiting was a suggestion...

Maybe sentiment analysis software...

🅱🅻🆄🅴🅱️

Föderation EN So 23.02.2025 00:36:46

@alcinnz @oldgeek

I really only trust who I trust.

If you say sentiment analysis I'm now trusting the software and the writer of the software.

I would prefer people's opinions, and especially those who I trust.

Just allow me to say if I trust people or not and allow others to subscribe to that trust or not.

And allow me on the fly to disagree with someone else's trust. Someone shows up as gold trust with a flurry of bad takes. Let me override and say I don't need to hear them anymore.

alcinnz

Föderation EN So 23.02.2025 00:38:57

@BlueBee @oldgeek These tools would be for folks like the top-of-thread who can't respond to all the fan/hate-mail they get!

Fame has its downsides...

🅱🅻🆄🅴🅱️

Föderation EN So 23.02.2025 00:39:16

@alcinnz @oldgeek

Write me software that reviews video games. You can't.

alcinnz

Föderation EN So 23.02.2025 00:42:06

@BlueBee @oldgeek I think we're in the context-collapse territory top-of-thread complained about in his video.

Also: Who said anything about video games?

I'll end the conversation here!

🅱🅻🆄🅴🅱️

Föderation EN So 23.02.2025 00:46:12

@alcinnz @oldgeek

This isn't context collapse lol.

And the reason why I'm talking about video games is because video games are less complex to review than people, and if you can't write a program that can review them, then you can't write a program that can review people.

On how this relates to his issue, he is saying that the problem is he gets 1 to 1 good to bad takes. A big part of this is that he has no method of sorting these takes. They are all viewed equally. So no matter if it's a well respected scientist or a troll, they all look the same.

Some method of determining trust is required, but if you give this to a single entity like with Blue sky it's too much power for an individual entity to have. But it still needs to be solved as the original poster has stated.

We have a giant pool of very capable reviewers who could help the larger creators sort through people and find who they should probably be listening to, but they lack the levers to provide that service.

alcinnz

Föderation EN So 23.02.2025 00:52:45

@BlueBee @oldgeek Maybe people are hard to review, but text is quite easy to approximate an automated solution for. I was thinking of a system which judges based on word choice, it works reasonably well for eMail.

Anyways I'm not all that interested in this meta-talk...

Evan

Föderation EN Sa 22.02.2025 20:32:08

Föderation · Sa 22.02.2025 20:31:01

@TechConnectify I'm in the middle of your 'tube video. Great observations.

My complaint with masto is that even years later, my feed is still only populated with people I manually tracked from that place - I wish there were some sort of "for you", as even seeing stuff boosted by friends doesn't lead to much new discovery. Maybe it is just a problem of someone with a smallish following count. Not having network-wide search is the real deficiency.

'tube subscriptions. Since I decline to have a google account, I accomplish the manual "subscribe" solution via my own "tube feeder" software - just an external website that tracks select channel ids. Works great.

Now - how to get my kid to sit through your well thought-out Cloud Bad video?

eblu (mastodon)

Föderation EN Sa 22.02.2025 21:15:07

@TechConnectify @wonkothesane Alright, ramble warning. TL;DR you're right and more people on here should be doing something about it.

I honestly think that more people should be lighting a fire under Mastodon for this. There are plenty of improvements that have been proposed to it going back years but a lot of them have been ignored under the "benevolent dictator for life" model, which Mastodon is only now preparing to move on from. It's resulted in it falling far behind and letting Bluesky run laps around it effortlessly. That and there really needs to be more UX people in FOSS.

As for the culture, someone higher up really needs to start taking a harder stance against the constant scolding that some people do. Yelling at someone to content-warn a post under something that the original poster didn't even know was a problem or condescendingly saying that someone should switch to Linux for the apparent crime of using Windows, even for reasons outside of their control (e.g. not everything works under WINE or a VM), is a huge issue that somehow hasn't been addressed.

And, well, there's the everything else about decentralized, federated networks that result in a very awkward experience for those coming from centralized platforms, but Mastodon seems to be working on that so I can at least give them that. Maybe the "it's scraping our posts, white techbro" sect can chill at least a little bit once FASPs get implemented.

Föderation EN So 23.02.2025 01:02:37

Today I noticed that @TechConnectify has an account here in addition to and I was just about to ask how the two platforms compared for that sort of usage. And then I saw that my question had already been answered 🙂

I think this is a very useful bit of feedback for / from exactly the sort of content creator that a lot of you want to see coming to this platform.

I would only add one other thought, I'm suspecting the character count limits between interfaces to the two platforms might also be significant to TC.

Otherwise I had been wondering about whether it's better to have accounts on both platforms or just to use those gateway services between the two.

(Also, I don't know, maybe I should be doing a quote post with this, because it does seem to break the stream of conversation, but I don't know)

@TechConnectify@mas.to we don't push popular creators off the platform, we just hold them to the same expectations as everyone else. Things like alt text is very important here and there are cultural nuances that need to be learned. Guess what though, I learned them just fine by listening and changing my behavior to accommodate that.

@TechConnectify I'd argue that the same desires that lead to "algorithmic complacency" as you've called it, are those that made TV feel so much different when you could just turn on the tube, switch to some station, and watch whatever was on, very little choice or effort required. There's certainly a part of me that misses that. Same with tuning into a radio station and hearing new music. There is an aspect of discovery, like browsing a thrift store and finding what you did not expect.

@TechConnectify
I tremendously enjoy your silly videos about weird and obsolete tech, but this one hits on a very different level.
I absolutely share your concern about a future where our thinking is goverened by algorithms nobody really understands anymore (I just watched Joe Scott's TMI video this morning where he mentions that he knows one of the engineers at Youtube who are responsible for working on the algorithm, and that not even they understand it in full anymore).
This is the reason why I hang out here on Mastodon. This is the reason why I don't use other social media. I subscribe to Youtube channels I like through their feeds (I import them into my RSS reader and follow them in this manner, so I never even have to interact with the recommendations Youtube pushes on me).

I am incredibly concerned about the developments in society over the last 15 years or so since algorithmic curation of content has become widespread. This can lead to all kinds of dangerous developments, including the rise of very questionable figures into positions of power because they are not ashamed to exploit the algorithms to further their own agenda.

Thank you very much for making this video. I'm sure I'll watch it again, probably many more times. But I think now I have to get away from the screen and go outside to get some fresh air. As important this is to think about, it's also really heavy and depressing.

@TechConnectify My problem with YouTube's subscriptions page is that it appears to have no control over marking whether you are done with something or want to leave it in the list for later (if it's something you need to be in the mood for).

RSS readers can do this easily, and I use that to 'triage' my lists all the time. YouTube's way of displaying whether things have new content seems really arbitrary and unhelpful.

But that's probably in the bit you cut for time.

@InsertUser @TechConnectify I believe you can still get RSS from youtube channels!

@TechConnectify Excellent video! You’re one of the best writers on YouTube to be able to navigate such a complex topic in such a clear way. Thanks for all your work!

@TechConnectify I like the premise, and I think this is why some older people don't understand new software interfaces. We designed them to be like physical interfaces before and now the more "intuitive" interface designs from younger coders who grew up without physical interfaces.

@TechConnectify Is this video available in another platform? Thanks.

@TechConnectify

With a one minute timer (and no specialized knowledge), I managed to get as far as the model 15, knew I was in the right ballpark because it had the same footprint but a different faceplate, but I unpaused the video to check if you were going to provide the answer to the "quiz" before allotting any more time to that rabbit hole (which you did).

And after listening to that preface, I had a feeling that you were going to express an opinion that I agreed with (which is one of the reasons I'm on this platform).

> I don't talk about things I don't understand.

I cannot count how many people have gotten upset at me for saying I don't have an opinion on something.

If I don't possess enough knowledge about something to have an *informed* opinion on something, I don't have an opinion on it at all. So many people in this "New World" have difficulty understanding that.

> Surely this new video won't make me seem like a crank.

Not here, I don't think. If anything you might be preaching to the choir, but I certainly forgive you.

If nothing else, I'm going to be able to use the posted opinions on this thread as a vetting tool to further expand my follow list.

@jarek @TechConnectify IIRC, Nebula is still invite-only, so he may not have the opportunity. Would be another creator for me to follow over there, tho, which would be nice.

Technology Connections fits so well with Nebula. I would be surprised if they didn't love him from day one.

@TechConnectify I fully agree with all said in this video. But I would say many people here feel the same.

@TechConnectify

Oh, brother, your video gets into exactly my gripes with today's internet, apps and AI, saying more in half an hour than I could explain in 4 hours.

Day-by-day, the Internet is becoming less about surfing it or sailing it, but more like a lazy river where people simply lie back and are taken by the current, being told what to be interested in.

It's why I'm on to begin with. And thanks for the Canada shout-out against these BS annexation threats.

@TechConnectify I'll be one more voice thanking you for continuing to be here, even if not as actively, despite the FediKaren HOA.

I am clearly naïve because I thought that the subscription view would be the most popular path to watching your videos. Not all or even most videos, but at least yours!

@TechConnectify Are your videos available anywhere else than YouTube?

Have you looked into PeerTube?

@TechConnectify nice to see the callout to the YouTube subscription feed. If you turn your watch history off on YouTube, it'll completely disable the home algorithmic feed.

With a few unofficial mods you can nuke shorts too!

@alphapuggle @TechConnectify I use github.com/doma-itachi/Youtube but I'm sure it's not the only way to avoid shorts on your subscribe page.
