The world's tallest and longest hedge, the Meikleour Beech Hedge runs alongside and towers over the A93 a few miles south of Blairgowrie in Perthshire. Planted in the autumn of 1745, it has a tragic story to tell. More pics and info: undiscoveredscotland.co.uk/bla

The remains of the unusual Burleigh Castle, standing beside the A911 to the east of Milnathort in Perth & Kinross. Its origins date back to 1446 and today it comprises two very contrasting towers, the more ornate being added in 1582. More pics and info: undiscoveredscotland.co.uk/mil

Port Ellen, the only significant settlement on the island of Islay's south coast and the island's main deep water harbour. It was established in 1821 by Walter Campbell, then Laird of Islay, and named after his first wife Eleanor. More pics and info: undiscoveredscotland.co.uk/isl

Doune Castle in Doune, north-west of Stirling. It's a fine castle built in the late 1300s that featured in the film Monty Python and the Holy Grail; as Castle Leoch in Outlander; and as Winterfell in the pilot episode of Game of Thrones. More pics and info undiscoveredscotland.co.uk/dou

An ideal post for Valentine's Day? Sweetheart Abbey south of Dumfries, founded by Lady Devorgilla in 1273 in loving memory of her husband, John Balliol. In a rather gruesome twist, she carried his embalmed heart around in an ivory box. More pics and info: undiscoveredscotland.co.uk/new
