I finally did it. I used an LLM. A couple of months ago, MS added its Copilot to Windows. I turned it off. But the latest update shoved it back in my face and tried to get me to let it use my data. So I asked it a question: How do I get rid of Copilot? It suggested I uninstall it like any other program, but MS removed that option. But Copilot went on to tell me the exact registry key to change to block it from loading, and now it's gone.

Share the process please! I particularly want to get rid of bloatware. I uninstall successfully, but each time I create a new user I find everything I uninstalled in the new user.

Run the following command from the terminal:

reg add HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsCopilot /v TurnOffWindowsCopilot /t REG_DWORD /d 1 /f

Reboot.

Requires admin access; works on Win11 Pro and Home.

the thing is, 10 years ago, if you asked google a question about windows or office, among the top hits would almost always be a hit like this toot, with specific usable on point instructions

15 years ago, I got a wierd MS error message and google led me to an Australian software company that had a program you could download that would fix the problem (I forget the details) !!

now google is so bad .

@WearsHats People dunk on linux users for using the terminal to install basic stuff, and meanwhile Windows require registry edits to - not even uninstall unwanted bloatware - just stop it from running automatically.

@WearsHats

I asked Google Assistant on my phone how to remove it.

It was annoying because it popped up if I accidentally long pressed on the middle button. I never use it.

It told me I couldn't but I could turn it off.

So I did.

Now it pops up both on the middle button *and* when I connect a Bluetooth device.

But instead of asking how it can help, it says "turn me on, so I can help you".

Google obviously uses a different meaning of "turned off"

@WearsHats

So in summary, this registry command creates a new DWORD value named TurnOffWindowsCopilot under HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsCopilot and sets its value to 1, which tells Windows to disable the Copilot feature for the current user account
