How annoying is it to run a single user activitypub server?

And any recommendations?

@alienghic may I humbly point you in the general direction of @homegrown and this post of them social.growyourown.services/@h?

@grob

Thank you.

The things I'm contemplating about are financial cost for hosting, and being responsible for dealing with all the moderation

Just posted this, might be helpful?

Moderation should be relatively okay if you're just a single user instance. Cost will depend how you're hosting things of course.

@alienghic Keep in mind that you probably won't see a lot of threads (unless you use a client that switches to remote servers for checking threads). You'll still see conversations amongst the people you follow, of course, but random other people's responses won't get cached by your instance.

@Andres4NY

The instance I'm currently on is fond of muting big instances, so I'm already doing a lot of "open original post"

@alienghic I moved from octodon.social to a self-hosted single-user GoToSocial instance that I installed on the server I already had for all my other stuff (costing me €15/mo for 75GiB of disk, a few GiB of RAM); I started with all the accounts I knew from my old account so getting connected was easy; there is no moderation since it's just me I guess.

# du -sh /home/gotosocial
17G /home/gotosocial

Monit claims that gotosocial uses 182.5 MB of RAM.

I'm not quite sure this answered your question?

Since I have a lot of weird web server settings, getting it all to work with GoToSocial was a bit tricky. If you have a default install, it should be easier. This was the last blog post on the topic, I think: https://alexschroeder.ch/view/2022-12-22_GoToSocial_instead_of_snac

I've never had any problems upgrading GoToSocial since then. Using a single SQLite file is great, no extra database required.

@alienghic I've been running gotosocial for @technomancy@hey.hagelb.org on a server in my home for almost 2 years now

it's ridiculously easy if you set it to use sqlite; basically dynamic DNS and NAT are the only complicated parts and those have nothing to do with gts and everything to do with "residential ISPs suck"

gotosocial just keeps getting better and better

@alienghic I've been running my own Mastodon server for a bit over a year now, and it's been a ride. (For me, definitely worth it!)

I wrote about my experience here: stefanbohacek.com/blog/lessons

Hope this helps!

Not that annoying - but I had to write my own server to get the, admittedly peculiar, user interface I want.

So not only do I run a single user server, I am also the only user of the software it runs ;-)

The most annoying thing is that every Mastodon server your server has ever talked to keeps sending your server messages about accounts that have been deleted. I don't really care, and I don't think there is a way to tell them to stop.
