Föderation EN Mo 17.02.2025 16:54:21 @arstechnica Another reason to quit X. How many more do you need? |

Föderation EN Mo 17.02.2025 17:29:37 @arstechnica I'd rather not trust a centralized app from the same person who sold out Whatsapp users to the Zuckerborg over XMPP anyway. |
Föderation EN Mo 17.02.2025 18:51:22 @KitsuneVixi @arstechnica that was the other whatsapp guy, but keep spreading fud |
Föderation EN Mo 17.02.2025 19:31:51 @rene0 @KitsuneVixi @arstechnica minibillionaire brian acton can control signal organization according to non-profit documents. |
Föderation EN Mo 17.02.2025 19:42:14 @zetabeta @rene0 @KitsuneVixi @arstechnica what’s a “mini billionaire” a billionaire is a billionaire. |
Föderation EN Mo 17.02.2025 19:47:29 @fistfulofdave @rene0 @KitsuneVixi @arstechnica elon musk, larry elison, jeff bezos and mark zuckerberg and some others have eleven zeros. minibillionaire only have 9 zeros. you know, poor guy compared to those 11 zeros guys. |
Föderation EN Mo 17.02.2025 19:09:36 I think Brian Acton did the right thing: took billions from Facebook then helped fund the golden standard of secure messaging platforms. Signal is unlikely to be sold as it's open source so there's no "proprietary" magic. They collect no user data so there's nothing to be mined/sold for ads. Lastly, Signal is developed by a non-profit, so there's no shareholders pushing to "maximize profit". At the end of the day, Signal is a great alternative to the mainstream platforms. |

Föderation EN Mo 17.02.2025 18:33:20 @arstechnica Another reason to switch from WhatsApp to Signal |
Föderation EN Mo 17.02.2025 19:01:54 @GerritStegehuis To be fair, even if someone discovered and made public a backdoor on WhatsApp (a real one, not speculation), most people would not move to Signal. Well, most of my contacts that moved from WhatsApp moved to Telegram, which isn't encrypted by default and even makes encrypted chats hard to use. Most people I saw talking about moving from WhatsApp also say they prefer Telegram because it was more features (of course, in exchange for their data). The only three contacts I have on Signal are people who care about their privacy (like a IT worker and a gov worker). Even if Signal got popular somehow, I don't see companies (which use WhatsApp a lot: I have lots of company contacts here, like healthcare, foods, banks, airlines...) using it since it's hard to set up bots for it. |
Föderation EN Mo 17.02.2025 19:52:05 A progressive gen z person I know even thought Signal was a "bad company". No idea how she got that into her head (TikTok I'd imagine, and she's also part of the Apple cult unfortunately) but it's kind of indicative of why these platforms and privacy apps struggle to gain popular traction. You've got fascists above and fascists below, all vying for control over people but what they CAN all agree on is undermining privacy and human rights together. |

Föderation EN Mo 17.02.2025 18:56:52 What ever Musk censors or tries to kill, the people must flood support. Whatever he supports must be denied. #GegenMusk Big tech must go. Their concentration of power has to end. Technological, oligopoly or monarchy is not working out unless a few hundred people in the world living lives of untold wealth and power is a definition of working. We need distributed federated internet services, just as we need democracy. Our lives depend on it. |
