Föderation EN Mi 14.05.2025 00:49:37 @evan discovery is still a problem |

Föderation EN Mi 14.05.2025 00:52:25 No, they'll have a better experience on a smaller one, BUT... it IS easier to get signed up on one of the big ones first. |
Föderation EN Mi 14.05.2025 00:52:54 if we can make account movement flawless, we should probably have default servers with handholding that kinda force you to move after a couple months. |
Föderation EN Mi 14.05.2025 00:54:16 @evan ...unless they self-host, they should join a stable instance that agrees to a basic covenant which includes what happens if they shutdown, robust and faithful moderation team, and a support chain of command. |
Föderation ES Mi 14.05.2025 00:57:02 @evan un NO rotundo Descentralización es lo mejor para el fediverse red de redes de la cual una parte la forma Mastodon Pero no no y no |
Föderation EN Mi 14.05.2025 01:00:45 @evan I would say the explore tab is pretty lonely on smaller servers, I know there is work to fix that, but until that lands I think the smaller servers do have a disadvantage there. |
Föderation EN Mi 14.05.2025 01:17:34 @evan No, but the system is designed in such a way that that's what most people will do. |
Föderation EN Mi 14.05.2025 02:37:52 @ValueSubtracted no, it wasn't. |
Föderation EN Mi 14.05.2025 02:22:44 @evan I think what makes the Fediverse special is small community servers, it's an experience that's impossible on Twitter or Bluesky. Many think the community should be separate from the infrastructure, but I think connecting the two is actually helpful for governance. Without that, I don't see how you motivate small communities investing in infrastructure, and without that, network effects drive everyone to one big server that explodes. But, some people need the reach of a big server. |

Föderation EN Mi 14.05.2025 02:50:02 @evan I should have prefaced that with Yes, but. "I don't care" as an option wouldn't quite capture my answer. Maybe "I don't care, Welcome" is close. Not at all a criticism of how others use the word, as that would defeat the entire purpose. As a developer "should" is akin to "must" and "shall", & somehow that makes ethical sense to me. Again YMMV Addendum, I love your FAQ, I enjoy discovering it a response topic at a time, usually not mine. |
Föderation EN Mi 14.05.2025 03:20:07 @mrcopilot haha. It has been a real lifesaver. |
Föderation EN Mi 14.05.2025 02:40:36 @evan Better discovery tooling up front would help a lot, and the tooling and culture around instance migration could be improved. |
Föderation EN Mi 14.05.2025 04:20:32 @evan Yes, but. It's reasonable to start there, but not really the best place to stay for most people. |
