German reunification has been more successful than almost anyone in 1990 would have predicted. 35 years later, Germany is free and democratic, economically strong and stable. And its strength has not led it down the path of aggression again, as so many back then feared it would.

But there are limits to how successful the reunification project has been. And you can see them starkly in the map of last weekend's election results.

Map of Sunday's German election results, colored by which party won in each district. The far right-wing AfD party won across all of what used to be East Germany, while the center-right CDU/CSU won across the old West.

@jalefkowit God, how ironic that the new Nazis are the old Communists. I didn't realize that.

@jalefkowit I saw a lot of commentary this morning to the effect that the former DDR was basically stripped for parts after reunification; its industries largely sidelined; and promises of economic advancement never quite materialized. So what happens politically when an entire region, one deeply suspicious of Russia, ends up poor & under-resourced?

Controversial hand gestures, I guess.

@20002ist Yeah, one of the ongoing stories of reunification has been the East not quite getting fully integrated into the prosperity of the West. The East lags behind in all sorts of economic and demographic indicators. So there is a sense there of the East as something that has been swallowed, but not digested.
