@hipsterelectron

Thanks for sharing this thread.

You make many valid points. I agree with a lot of what you wrote and have some thoughts on this and some questions, but first of all, just to clarify, aren't Element and Matrix different things, just like Mastodon isn't the same thing as Activity Pub? I mean it would be unfair to say Activity Pub and the Fediverse are bad just because you don't like the Mastodon app or a specific Mastodon server.

"matrix said at the top of this post that they were unceremoniously kicking off any clients that don't support their device fingerprinting API ... signal makes it very easy to use their work without using their code. matrix doesn't—why? ... i won't let matrix market themselves with the language of rust and decentralization"

The Mastodon post and blog you linked to are from Element. I believe the Matrix account on Mastodon is @matrix

@jenkinse i know who both of them are and snitch tagging is considered rude. very much like activitypub, where mastodon exerts vast control over all other fediverse implementations, element exerts control over matrix:

Created by the founders of Matrix, Element continues to contribute extensively to the Matrix protocol,

element is the flagship, and you are conflating my critique of one with the other. nowhere did i say matrix was "bad"

Thanks for helping to make that distinction! It's an important one:

Yes, Matrix is the open source protocol that is stewarded by the Foundation, and Element is both the name of a company that works in the space and the name of the clients they produce.
