Bluesky users! Read this mastodon.murkworks.net/@moira/

She/her ex-software dev now writing words for money, fun, or survival. I write short here, and long on my Fediblog.

Republicans have worked to kill off me and mine my whole life, so if you hate "Dems" or "libs" more than actual fash? DNI+GFY.

I also make bike maps and 3D printables. Want to support me or my Mastodon instance? patreon.com/solarbird

Hey, users and thinking about Threads!

1: Users:

A: You can limit who can send you DMs/PMs! You can also limit notifications!

B: You can also block a site entirely for yourself.

See attached pics for how.

2: Instance administrators:

If you don't want to block threads.net entirely, consider these options for your userbase's safety:

A: Between "Full federation" and "Suspend" there is LIMIT, which hides content from an instance unless a user either follows the user posting it, or searches for it.

B: There is also "Reject media," which means you never cache a remote site's attachments. This de facto makes all such content sensitive ("unavailable"), requiring an additional click to view.

Users can limit notifications and DMs; this shows the Preferences/Notifications screen in the desktop web view, with an arrow pointing at the "Other notifications settings" section at the bottom. The checkbox options given are "Block notifications from non-followers," "Block notifications from people you don't follow," and "Block direct messages from people you don't follow."

Content policies on our threads.net domain block showing what "Limit" and "Reject media" look like in the UI. Individual users can still follow and talk with users from threads.net, but all threads.net content will be hidden from anyone not choosing specifically to follow those same users.

The profile of Instagram head Adam Mosseri (@mosseri@threads.net) as seen from Mastodon's web interface, with the "more" (three vertical dots) button pressed to bring down a menu which includes "Block domain threads.net" at the bottom. Select that to block the entire domain.

I was in a discussion today with @TechConnectify and @feditips about reply toxicity here, and I've tried to make all of that into a coherent post.

I want to go to with a version of this, but need to let it sit overnight and probably rewrite it. But I also think it's something anyone interested in non-corporate-controlled social media needs to think about, because a fair number of people go "influencers, fuck 'em" and that's... not how I think this needs to be understood. If you don't care about them, fine, but care about their followers who _will_ follow them away.

Because like it or not, if you want to go against corporate-owned social media, you need these people too.

HEY LOCALS!

I'm not planning on joining the Mastodon 4.2 Beta, but I will be upgrading when it drops for reals.

Today I ran a bunch of version compatibility checks to make sure we'll be ready to go. (We are.)

V4.2 includes a lot of new features, a bit of feature removal (which I complained about but has functionally been worked around) and also adds full-text search in a better way than we've been doing it with ElastiSearch.

Whether your toots will be full-text searchable depends upon an opt-in which you'll be able to find in your Preferences. Given that the UI for this has already changed between Beta 1 and Beta 2, I guessing how it'll look in final release, but it'll be there.

There will be some downtime, but hopefully not much.
