I recommend trying to follow lots of accounts (150+) in the beginning so that you have a solid feed going. You can always unfollow some later to curate your feed more.

The boost button is really important -- more than the favorite button -- for helping other people see posts since there's no algorithm to do that.

Also note that due to the way that federation works you won't see old posts from accounts that haven't been "seen" by your server. You can open the direct link to profiles to see their full history.
