German may be a terrible language to learn, but on the bright side, it's hell.

Cancelled next week's trip to Germany. Would have travelled the night of the 16th/17th, when they institute checks on all land borders for the purpose of appeasing far-right fucktards, with so much as a week's warning, and I expect their crumbling rail system to grind to a screeching halt as a ripple effect.

On the plus side, this enables me to meet with Open Source Summit folks in Vienna. Silver lining, I guess?

Anyway though, to hell with borders and all the idiots that want them back.

𐎧𐏁𐎹𐎠𐎼𐏁𐎠 ("Xšayār̥šā"), commonly rendered in English using the transliteration Xerxes (from Greek Ξέρξης) by which we also refer to an Achaemenid ruler, has an alternative transliteration, Ahasuerus (from Hebrew אֲחַשְׁוֵרוֹשׁ).

Ahasuerus Fromanteel was the first maker of pendulum clocks in England.

Besides giving you utterly useless trivia, this post should be an interesting test of your Fedi client's support of non-Latin scripts and left-to-right/right-to-left rendering.

This talk will probably have an interesting Q&A session.

(The SMTP smuggling talk is streaming now.)

Yesterday I had a 90-minute "meeting". I was alone, in my office, doing a video call, in which I did a normal share of the talking.

The CO₂ level in my office was 700ppm at the start and 2000ppm at the end. Just from me exhaling while talking.

Cognitive function starts getting impaired somewhere between 1200 and 1500ppm.

Please draw your own conclusions as they relate to closed-door, in-person "executive committee", "company leadership", or board meetings.

Or ministerial cabinet meetings. 🥴

On machines, when did you stop referencing physical device names (like /dev/vda, /dev/sdc) in your configurations, and used either some form of auto-discovery or else relied on filesystem labels, partition UUIDs or other /dev/disk/by-* symlinks exclusively?

(boosts OK, of course)

In this interview there's a lovely little detail that Sir Paul explains about the piccolo trumpet solo in Penny Lane.

(And the other 42 minutes are equally enjoyable.) bbc.co.uk/programmes/m0010wp3
