The last few weeks have really highlighted just how fragile corporate social media is, and just how beholden to political power it is. To build any sort of ground-up power we must continue to invest in decentralized alternatives that are resistant to intervention

@404mediaco

The decentralized instance (mastodon.social) you're using is hosted behind Fastly, a centralized American cloud corporation worth 1.34 billion US Dollars.

If they decide, they can block any post from your account, or modify anything you post.

Because mastodon.social admins, in their quest for decentralized social media without corporate control, decided to give this company full MITM access.

@leo @404mediaco And how high do you rate that risk?
They could also move their account and followers tomorrow if they wanted. 🤷🏻‍♂️

This is _classic_ making perfect the enemy of the good. Sure, they could roll their own instance or whatever — but they're here, aren't they?

@havn @leo Exactly. I would MUCH rather @404mediaco spend their time right now doing journalism than running a Fediverse instance of their own.

It's not like they *can't* migrate to doing so later, should the need arise.

There is very little downside to being aware of potential issues; but in the grand scheme of things this is one I would personally rank very low on risk and low on impact. They control their own publication avenue (web site) and can reach likely most of their readers directly.

@mkj @leo @404mediaco Jupp… I just hate it when people (and organisations), who do a lot of good, get flack because "Pff, you could (theoretically) do even better! 😤".

It's similar to when people recommend alternatives to WhatsApp, and some people are like "Nah, man – this other thing is marginally better than what you recommended!”

@leo @404mediaco

So what? The is … federated 🙂

If mastodon.social is gone, we still can interact between your raru.re and my framapiaf.org.

Sure, mastodon.social is far too big, there are too many people on it. A "square" distribution would be better, I guess.

Still better than (federation only theoretically possible) or Signal (no federation at all).

@404mediaco Well, at least until the telcos yank the basic connectivity out from under them

@404mediaco Except they aren't beholden, they are choosing this.
