Is there a particularly good book about the history of Western colonialism/imperialism in the Middle East? I’m thinking, like, mid- to late-Ottoman empire to recent history.

Edward Said’s Orientalism has been on my list forever, but I want some background before I dig into it.

@Ashedryden it's north Africa but State and Revolution in Algeria by Rachid Tlemcani covers exactly that period

@Ashedryden should say it's not good as an overview, he does a comparison of Ottoman and French colonialism in Algeria mixed in with a discussion of various Marxist theories of the state that were developing in the '60s and '70s, but it's a good book and I learned a lot reading it.

@Ashedryden also this is right at the end of the period but I'd never heard of it before finding this article. 1965 March Intifada in Bahrain.

@catch56 “It is noteworthy that the total of those killed in these incidents to date are three demonstrators, while twenty-one wounded, some of them eloquently.” interesting turn of phrase

@catch56 I’m relatively new to mid east history. A few months back I read All the Shah’s Men about the British + American moves + coup that led to the 1979 revolution in Iran

@Ashedryden just dive in; it's pretty accessible.

@evan I’m not worried about accessibility, I want the historical context

@Ashedryden this is contextual but opinionated and focused on Palestine. I'd also recommend: history of byzantium podcast,
