In a move that will supprise no-one, Microsoft has stopped shipping Outlook Classic with new PC's but even after years of development, they don't support email from any small email players.

So you have to install an old 365 separately to get Outlook Classic back.

This page (sorry its an advert for PC world) has a solution that works. (MSFTs solutions don't) pcworld.com/article/2469158/ho

The new Outlook is still being improved and adapted to third-party mailboxes that are not in Microsoft domain names. It can be well adapted to mailboxes from companies such as Gmail or Yahoo. However, for some uncommon third-party IMAP mailboxes, the new Outlook may not be fully adapted yet. If you have the right to use the classic version of Outlook, you can try to use the classic version of Outlook to configure it. After years of development, the classic version of Outlook is more adaptable to third-party mailboxes. The new Outlook is also constantly improving and enriching its functions.

Ok, Im wrong, but for all the right reasons.

I took this information from a number of posts on Microsoft forums, by Microsoft employees.

Today I tried, it, and "New" outlook does appear to work with IMAP.

Even though Microsoft says it doesn't.

Tried both moving an account from "old" Outlook and adding in from new.

You need to untick recommended settings 'cause it gets it very wrong.

and you can't have a login that isn't your email address

and it sends all your data, and account passwords to Microsoft cloud.

and it's horrible, but it works.

@Extelec yes this is the issue. New Outlook is a web page and Microsoft need to read your email for you to provide it. I don’t want them reading my email.

@thejpster Neither do I, but my customers still want outlook. I do however point out all the security implications, not that it has any effect. "users" just don't care, until they do.

I push @thunderbird whenever possible, but the lack of integration with other MS products, and learning curve is too great for most.

@Extelec @thejpster Thanks for encouraging your customers to use us, and as Exchange support (email first, then other components) lands in our stable release and we work on documentation and other tools to help with the learning curve, we hope more customers take you up on Thunderbird.
