If anyone wants their own personal copy of Wikipedia on their computer, phone or tablet, a copy that cannot be deleted or edited by anyone else, there's an app called @kiwix that makes this possible:

kiwix.org

You can use the same app to install offline copies of lots of wiki-powered sites and many others too. I have a copy of WikiVoyage on my phone so wherever I go there's always some kind of info about it without needing an internet connection.

@FediThing @kiwix

I think this is a necessary matter to safe keep Wikipedia. There is another issue: the channels of communication themselves are being swamped with bots. When these sites are inundated with scrapers, it’s slowed down for legit use.

Lord, what I wouldn’t wish for the means to create a completely different Internet that doesn’t have any commercial penetration to it.

@FediThing @kiwix I didn't know you could do it with Wikivoyage. Cool!

Have a spare laptop with few TB of space on it?

You can quickly torrent the full as a ~100G zim file. Many languages too.

Just add .torrent to the zim filename and open that url in your tor client.

Check the mirror and readme docs.!!

β€˜Zimit’ folder has other offline websites as zim files.

β€˜Other’ has other wikis

Text listings:
download.kiwix.org/

download.kiwix.org/zim/

Or web GUI to same files and :
library.kiwix.org

@FediThing Suddenly feeling nostalgic for the three encyclopedia sets I had as a child...there are wiki pages I visit over and over again, so this will be very handy.

@FediThing @kiwix How graceful is the update process? Something like rsync on a daily or weekly basis would be a nice feature.

@FediThing @kiwix I'm not saying you should throw up copies of wikipedia that have had all the facts changed so that AI will scrape them and poison the training model because that would be bad.

@FediThing @robertoacj @kiwix Any idea how much storage space would be required for the English version?

@mlanger Just installed the app to check it and you can download sections of Wikipedia (for example, selected geography articles) or an offline version of Wikipedia as a whole; in Portuguese, it's 14,9 GB for the regular offline version and 1,9 GB for a "brief text" version.

edit: for the English version, I see a 6,9GB and a 53,2 GB version.

@robertoacj Thanks so much for this. It looks like a good project when I get home.

@FediThing @dichotomiker @kiwix back in the early 2000s we had mobipocket for that

before 24/7-mobile internet was a thing it was sooooo useful to always have a full (no images) copy of wikipedia on the PDA!

@drazraeltod @FediThing @kiwix Concerning Wikipedia, especially the Article about Gender, people fear that 24/7 lead to too much volatility during Trump II.

@dichotomiker @FediThing @kiwix oh, I wasn't trying to claim "this is a bad idea now" - only: "it was a great thing back then"
