There are now more "pink slime" newspapers in the U.S. than there are genuine daily local newspapers. @AxiosNews reports that there are at least 1,265 websites that are backed by dark money or masquerading as local news sites for political purposes, whereas as of last year, there were 1,213 daily local papers. Here's more on the organizations involved, the communities being targeted, and some pointers on how to identify a "pink slime" site.

@gemini6ice It comes from the beef industry — pink slime is a paste made from beef trimmings to fill out ground beef. So here, it's poor quality journalism built to resemble the good stuff.
