"Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep"
by Phillip K. Dick.

Bladerunner was based on this book.

Bladerunner is an excellent film, but a terrible adaptation because it basically inverted the subtext.

The original book is about the horror of monsters living among us posing as humans (inspired by Nazis who complained that the screams of dying children made it hard to sleep). The film portrays the androids as sympathetic.
