The legality (not wisdom) of putting European private data on US clouds hinges on the availability of the US Privacy and Civil Liberties Oversight Board. Trump neutered this board, and the European parliament has taken notice & asked the European Commission what they think:

The Chairman IUST-SEC/LIBE D (2025) 2901 Mr Michael McGrath Commissioner for Democracy, Justice, the Rule of Law and Consumer Protection European Commission Rue de la Loi/Wetstraat 200 D 300788 06.02.2025 1049 Brussels Dear Commissioner McGrath, The Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs (LIBE Committee) closely follows all matters linked to the European Commission’s adequacy finding for the EU-US Data Privacy Framework mechanism. It was in view of the Commission’s assessment that the European Parliament adopted its resolution of 11 May 2023 on the adequacy of the protection afforded by the EU-US Data Privacy Framework (2023/2501(RSP)). Furthermore, during a LIBE Committee mission to Washington in May 2023, LIBE Members had an opportunity to discuss EU-US data transfers with Members of the US Congress, representatives of the US Departments of Justice and Commerce, as well as the Chair of the Federal Trade Commission. One of the issues considered in the above-mentioned resolution are the competences of the Privacy and Civil Liberties Oversight Board (PCLOB), an independent body responsible for ensuring that privacy and civil liberties are safeguarded. The EU-US Data Privacy Framework established a new review mechanism, allowing individuals in the EU whose personal da

My call for European governments to retain at least a core IT/communication/email/file capability that is independent of US clouds. Named after the iconic Radio Kootwijk which we built in response to the English cutting off our communications with Indonesia in 1916: berthub.eu/articles/posts/comm

George ’s 1940 review of Mein Kampf is an astounding read. It is very educational to study primary literature from just before historical events. In here we read that up to 1939 Hitler was regarded rather favorably by many, for reasons we might recognize today. Frightening: bookmarks.reviews/george-orwel

Doing a (brief) presentation Monday on long term software development (>10 years). Things you regret in year 8. I'd love to hear things you found out and wished you'd done differently. Or conversely, what worked out really well. Will turn this into a public presentation & blog post. To kick it off: PLEASE KEEP YOUR CODE AS SIMPLE AS POSSIBLE.

Dear fedifriends, I'm attempting to add a Mastodon logo to my blog, but my SVG skills are failing me. Behold the sad anemic Mastodon under this post, berthub.eu/articles/posts/euro - it is created by my Hugo theme applying something to the <path> I got & scaled from joinmastodon.org/branding - any help is welcome!

a thin mastodon logo between pretty nice github, mail, linkedin and google scholar logos.

After receiving a bunch of feedback today, I'm a bit dismayed. If based on your just formed gut feeling you think world renowned experts (not me) are all wrong on something, it is extremely unlikely you are right. And even if you are, the onus is then on you to come up with a well researched rebuttal. You can't just cite your gut feeling and challenge the world to prove that your novel idea is wrong. It is up to you to do the work.

Recently, some countries have restarted attempts to buy new nuclear reactors. In this post, I first set out why getting new nuclear power by 2038 is a nuts idea, but then take a look at energy diversification, which changes the picture a bit. However, the way we are going about ordering nuclear power is just plain wrong, and it is unlikely we'll do better. If so, we are better off spending the nuclear trillions on other ways of getting carbon-free and reliable energy: berthub.eu/articles/posts/nucl

After the recent publicity I have updated the Google beeper / googerteller somewhat, including new Google IP addresses. I've browsed the web a bit with it and things are as terrible as ever. Lots of noise. I've also reinstated the bpftrace based per-process capability. github.com/berthubert/googerte
