Föderation EN So 26.01.2025 21:11:27 @breadandcircuses this is not entirely true; it is *partially* you. You can read Shell's GHG emissions report here: Shell has about 50 Mt of scope 1 emissions, 10 Mt of scope 2 emissions, and about 1,200 Mt of scope 3 emissions. I can break that down. |
Föderation EN So 26.01.2025 21:13:06 @breadandcircuses scope 1 emissions are gases you create directly, say by running a generator or with an industrial process. Scope 2 are emissions from electricity you draw from the grid. So if your local electrical plant runs on coal, your use of that electricity causes emissions. |
Föderation EN So 26.01.2025 21:15:20 @breadandcircuses scope 3 emissions are indirect - emissions that happen because of your suppliers or customers. For Shell, they have about 300Mt of emissions from suppliers -- a lot! But by far their biggest emissions are for customers. 900Mt. That's huge, the equivalent of a medium-sized country, and it comes from us buying shell gas, putting it in our cars, and burning it. |
Föderation EN So 26.01.2025 21:16:34 @breadandcircuses I absolutely agree that big oil companies need to change their businesses immediately, and pay reparations for damages already incurred. But saying "it's not you" lets all of us off the hook, which isn't justified. |
Föderation EN So 26.01.2025 21:18:07 @breadandcircuses oh, finally: scope 3 GHG accounting is still relatively new. We're still working out who is ultimately responsible, or whether there is a shared responsibility. |
Föderation EN So 26.01.2025 22:13:34 @evan No, I think that's wrong. Because saying it's OUR fault lets the oil companies off the hook! |
Föderation EN So 26.01.2025 23:31:11 @breadandcircuses I agree that a lot of the rhetoric around climate change puts all the responsibility on individuals. We can't end climate change with individual action alone. But it *is* part of the solution. |
Föderation EN So 26.01.2025 23:41:29 @evan The thing is, though, individual actions can be an effective part of the "solution" ONLY IF capitalism is ended, degrowth is begun, and climate and social justice becomes the aim. Otherwise, individual actions are meaningless except as a way to stave off all the horribleness of societal collapse. |
