Föderation EN So 26.01.2025 03:12:45 @theverygaming @celesteh Oh thank god, I'm not the only person who has put network equipment on a stick and extended it outside of a window. That deployment was temporary though, and done in (british) summer on a dry day, but also the stick was very long to help clear the building and get better signal. |

Föderation EN Sa 25.01.2025 02:57:31 @celesteh |
Föderation EN Sa 25.01.2025 03:08:29 @celesteh Bluesky is like a two sided sword for me (does this saying work like this in English?) One one side I like it from a user perspective. It objectively has nice features like the fact that likes and comments are synced and not only partly shown like on Fedi because they’re not fully federating here. It also has those „feeds“ anyone can create, giving more timelines to the user to discover new people. On the other hand it’s not decentralized. Sure the PDS‘ are, but the moderation service (the main one) is still centralized and can’t be turned off. So it’s not secured against them going crazy and adapting to idk USA‘s new „standards“ or something like that. The identity server that verified the DID‘s is also not decentralized. So from a technical perspective, especially in a time where decentralization is important, Mastodon is objectively far ahead. However when it comes to adaption of non-technical users and ease of use, then Bluesky is far ahead, which explains why it gains so much more users. For me personally Mastodon will always be my focus, but I understand non-technical users that go to Bluesky saying that engagement is better or it’s easier for them to use, etc. |
Föderation EN Sa 25.01.2025 05:53:02 The normal English phrase is "double-edged sword", but obviously close enough! https://dictionary.cambridge.org/dictionary/english/double-edged-sword |

Föderation EN Sa 25.01.2025 06:27:18 @celesteh that 30 mil initiative is a scam ran by hustlers who are currently in AI but sure they wouldn't mind branching into social media if they can pocket 30 mil and do nothing for it. |

Föderation EN Sa 25.01.2025 09:54:46 @celesteh A mastodon instance of my own: 6 USD per month. I think Bluessky has a key flaw. It requires Venture Capitalists to survive, and in my opinion this is not a good situation to be in. |
Föderation EN Sa 25.01.2025 10:00:00 @celesteh there's a story about a group of geeks from Mendoza traveling to Buenos Aires in two cars. Don't remember the year, but it must have been late late 90s/early early 00s. Cell data was _expensive_, including the roaming they charged when you crossed provincial lines. So they setup an AP in one of the cars and I think it was either an IRC or XMMP server and used that to coordinate. Edit: forgot to mention: that was a 1k km (1Mm!) trip. |

Föderation EN Sa 25.01.2025 10:45:19 @celesteh I wonder how well activitypub deals with a node that’s only intermittently online. Why is there now part of me that wants to throw mastodon or perhaps one of the lighter apps on a sbc/mini pc and dangle it off the end of a cellular connection to try that |
Föderation EN Sa 25.01.2025 10:48:05 @Dragon ive also wondered this. Please give it a go! |
Föderation EN Sa 25.01.2025 10:51:24 @celesteh i’d probably have to vpn it via a VPS or some other place though So I could route incoming connections to it. Whilst I know of where I could get my hands on a sim with public static ip the data costs would be prohibitive for trying something like that! |

Föderation EN So 26.01.2025 22:27:07 @celesteh Since I first heard about the $30 million AT protocol thing, I’ve been wondering why it would take so much money. We have whole open source office suites. Photo editing software. Web browsers. Freaking OPERATING SYSTEMS. Sure, there’s corporate support behind many of them. But why $30 million? Why isn’t someone in Kyiv doing this right now? |
