This is an important effort to help explore what can be done to make the #Web less energy-hungry…. and thereby help reduce the impact of the overall #Internet on #ClimateChange. (Since web traffic is such a huge amount of Internet traffic.) Good to see this happening!

Join a #GlobalEncryptionDay event today! Organizations all around the world are celebrating how #encryption allows us to have a safe and secure online experience - and also the threats to our use of encryption. Find an event near you (or online): https://www.globalencryption.org/events/ged/ged-2024/events/
I'm joining in to parts of The Encryption Summit, a series of panels happening throughout the day: https://events.zoom.us/ev/AoJeeIwDpZ1Kw6MtWuA6WUoxljX8rFSwSQa6yIAmsrz4z0YyR_HX~AgvFs7_VrDTYubhtf6cueTP7ILUnfVmUt4de2orTkYcRAyBxf-zN57qfrg

Every month since around this time in 2005, I've contributed a "tech report" into the "For Immediate Release (FIR)" podcast hosted and produced by @shelholtz and @jangles . This month I talked mostly about the 1-year anniversary of the web version of Threads, and the evolution of that platform. All that and more was in my report... which is in the middle of all the other great discussions that Shel and Neville had in this episode. Give it a listen!

Advocates for #ActivityPub - IF YOU HAVE A #WORDPRESS SITE, have you installed the ActivityPub plugin? https://wordpress.org/plugins/activitypub/
At the State of the Word address this week, Matt Mullenweg was asked about support for the plugin, and he commented that less than 5,000 sites had installed it. So he wasn't sure how interested people are in it.
So... if you have a WP site, let's start installing that plugin and making more sites available via ActivityPub! 😀

How To Opt-In to Mastodon Search - a quick screenshot.
If you, like me, were trying to figure out the exact steps in the web interface, maybe this screenshot will help.
You start by going to your "Getting started" view and choose "Preferences" in the right column.
[This ONLY works if your Mastodon instance is running at least v4.2.0.]
Then, as shown in the image, you go to:
- Public profile
- Privacy and reach tab
- Check "Include public posts in search results"
- Save changes

Anyone have pointers to good recent articles or papers about the “paywalling of the web”?
I’m increasingly concerned that many of the good, informative, factual news articles are being put behind paywalls (or at least “registration walls” / “regwalls” where you have to login to see it), while the articles that are less accurate or are actual misinformation / disinformation are freely available.
I’d like to do some writing on the topic, but don’t want to duplicate what others have said.

Great reminder! I’ve seen the power of #Kiwix to bring the online world to places that are either offline or barely connected. As noted, it’s also a great way to have resilient access to information like #Wikipedia in the event of network outages.
