Reminder to not work yourself to death for the sake of your employer.

THEY ARE NOT LOYAL TO YOU.

@drahardja

Synergy: Tesla and X should merge

They can spiral around each each other until they collapse into a black hole.

Anyone that invests in either should realize that they are throwing their money into a black hole.

@drahardja I'll admit to some 80 hour weeks getting a site to IPO. I was young and stupid. Now I won't even consider gigs that open with "our stock grants will make up for your salary". ;) (But hey, I have a Webby, so that's totally worth the breakdown, right?)

@drahardja Recently read some discussion (which unfortunately I can't post) of asymmetric trust based on "An Integrative Model of Organizational Trust" (jstor.org/stable/258792). That's not to say the advice is wrong, but just to say there might still be ways forward that are beneficial for all (but I am an unashamed optimist).

@pdbartlett You’re absolutely right: it is possible to have a mutually caring relationship between employer and worker, but in today’s world, it’s very unlikely to happen.

In the 1950s, a (white) American (man) can expect to work for a company that will care for him for the rest of his life. He can join a union that protects him, and expect company executives and shareholders to extract a modest profit and have enough left over to pay for benefits and a pension. Corporate and individual taxes are progressive enough to pay for public goods and services.

That world is largely gone. Corporate greed is out of control. Regulatory capture is extensive, and corporate and individual taxes are now essentially regressive. Stock buybacks ensure that any benefit only accrues to shareholders, not workers, who are now considered undesirable expenses, not partners in progress.

There is no loyalty from employers left. The culture has changed. Our expectations must change as well.

@drahardja Definitely agree that a lot has changed, and even more so that not everyone's situation is the same.

I just wanted to call out that "success" in the new world is based on accepting that the relationship is asymmetric and finding something that works despite that.

@drahardja You can't say all vendors, customers, employers are employees as a group are not loyal. Sometimes you build relationships with great people and organizations. I don't know anything about , but based on their CEO's antics, I would not be surprised to find they are not a good vendor, supplier, or employer.

@cgervasi You realize I’m speaking in generalizations, yes?

@drahardja These people were simply not hardcore enough. Musk has been very clear that if you even think you might be hardcore, YOU AREN’T HARDCORE ENOUGH.

@drahardja and the way he was let go! No process, just locking him out of the system and sending him a termination email. Utterly despicable.

Just in case anyone was labouring under the misapprehension that Elon Musk is not a scumbag.

@drahardja I've been burned by this a couple of times - not even with a real belief that exceptional commitment would be especially rewarded, but simply because it (overtime, thankless work, whatever) seemed like the right thing to do at the time. If their profit stops rolling in, you stumble, or your health fails, it's "what have you done for me _lately_?" Goes double if you're a minoritised person in the workplace - you are truly exhaustible and expendable.

@drahardja of course he got fired. Showering at the factory is a waste of company resources! /s

@drahardja there are so many questions that come to my mind because of this.

Why the priority of this person was work on top of family, friends, social life…

Was this person raised in a culture that puts work as the top priority and most importantly as the only way to achieve personal development and success?

Probably this person though he was doing the right thing based on what he was taught to.

I was raised in a culture where work is a necessary evil.

@drahardja Well-meaning people make these choices all the time. I feel for the guy, and I hope he learns the lesson.

@drahardja If you're working harder than your boss, you've got the wrong boss. That may advocate for entrepreneurship, but it may just be "fire your boss and find another that is more compatible with your dedication."
