Live--from the Sonoran desert (well, actually, from about 30 minutes ago), it's comet C/2023 A3 Tsuchinshan-ATLAS in the Arizona evening sky!
(Quick edit as my travel laptop is pretty old and junkie with a low resolution monitor that is not color corrected.) [10/27 update: Now that I'm home I've updated the photo with a properly edited version.]

Color photo of a comet with a long tail pointing up and to the left. It's a late evening sky with a orange-red glow of the sunset on the horizon. The comet points down at a far distant hill. A tall multi-arm saguaro cactus is in the left foreground. A second saguaro can be seen in the distance on the right. The comet is framed between the two cacti.

@elaterite Beautiful.

@stargazersmith Thanks! Given I just arrived in the Sonoran desert-- and have been wanting to photograph saguaros for a long time-- this is a pretty nice start! Can't wait to get the raw image home to work on it on a proper computer. :)

@elaterite
I haven't lived in that area for a long time, but the flora and fauna are unique. I however was afraid to go out in the desert at night for fear of scorpions, cone-nose beetles, and gila monsters.

Unless it was my back yard, that is.

Föderation EN So 13.10.2024 06:19:31

@stargazersmith Yes, the Sonoran desert is really beautiful. I'm sitting outside in it tonight and I'm now wondering what are cone-nosed beetles??? I'm keeping an eye out for tarantulas as well!

Föderation EN So 13.10.2024 06:31:46

@elaterite
Oh yes. How did I forget the tarantulas?

Föderation EN So 13.10.2024 05:33:33

@elaterite
Oooh IF Only I could be there ❤️

Föderation EN So 13.10.2024 06:03:31

@elaterite

The comet is amazing. So it the light on the saguaro in the foreground.

Föderation EN So 13.10.2024 06:15:46

@TheEddieShow Thank you! Yes a little moon light is helpful!

Föderation EN So 13.10.2024 06:06:53

@elaterite

Beautiful picture.

I'm regretting that I had the perfect opportunity to see the comet but didn't because, well, I was just plain lazy.

Clouds moving in tomorrow .. maybe I'll try in 80,000 years.

Föderation EN So 13.10.2024 06:14:49

@cowboyminer Thank you! Give it a shot tomorrow. Maybe a hole in the clouds will give you a unique perspective?

Föderation EN So 13.10.2024 06:07:43

@elaterite that is terrific. I love the moonlight on the saguaros. and landscape.

Föderation EN So 13.10.2024 06:11:50

@alexskunz Thank you! It worked out nicely. When I shot NEOWISE rising over Emerald Bay at Lake Tahoe the moon was setting and it nicely illuminated the bay and Fannette Island. A bit of moonlight helps with comet photography I'd say. Can't wait to try editing it on a proper computer.

Föderation EN So 13.10.2024 06:08:29

@elaterite Wow, beautiful.

Föderation EN So 13.10.2024 06:28:16

@elaterite
Poetic!
I presume the Carnegiea gigantea (saguaro cactus) in the foreground is the same one you photographed and posted earlier in the day.

Föderation EN So 13.10.2024 07:51:56

@AkaSci Yes, it is the same one, but from the opposite side. I was scouting for a nice foreground for the comet. :)

Föderation EN So 13.10.2024 06:48:29

@elaterite Oh how beautiful!

Föderation EN So 13.10.2024 07:29:47

@elaterite wow, this is amazing. Well done. I hope to shoot those cactus soon as well.

Föderation EN So 13.10.2024 08:03:58

@paperdigits Thanks! They're great fun to shoot. They have so much personality!

Föderation EN So 13.10.2024 08:05:40

@elaterite @amyfou Amazing! I saw it on my Starry Night app but couldn’t see it visually. Great photo!

Föderation EN So 13.10.2024 08:08:55

@stg @amyfou Thank you! I could see it, but just barely.

Föderation EN So 13.10.2024 09:02:10

@elaterite How beautiful. In my city, there are plenty clouds these days, so we can't see the comet.

Föderation EN So 13.10.2024 09:47:03

@elaterite Great shot! The photo looks like one of those desktop wallpapers on MS Windows

Föderation EN So 13.10.2024 09:55:50

@elaterite Impressive picture! 🤩
