@evan I don't believe any other social networks have account migration at all. but it being so incomplete on fedi certainly undermines the way fedi *should* be able to let people own their identity, which is one of its main value proposition vs. centralized social media

@migratory you're correct; no other social network on the planet gives you the account portability that you get with the Fediverse. I find it hard to believe that this extremely rare process that people only do once or twice in their Fediverse lifetime, and that we already do better than any other social network and most other communications protocols, is the biggest UX problem.

@evan for new users, it doesn't matter at all. for users who have invested a lot in the platform it certainly does. and for users seriously considering the platform, it's important to be able to take claims like "your data is your own" or "you can migrate servers" at face value rather than with gaping caveats

@evan even paying for a service doesn't enable you to take your data with you at this point, sadly
