One thing that is misleading about the abbreviated Niemöller quote is that people didn't ignore the arrest of Communists because they weren't members of the Party themselves; they ignored it because they hated Communists.

At a time when "gang members", "illegal aliens" and "terrorists" are being deported, we have to remember that our compliance is being programmed by scare words. Naming Mahmoud Khalil an antisemite puts him outside of the law, where anything is permissible.

@evan Given what Communists have done every single place they have come to power, hating Communists is an entirely reasonable position. If you look into Marx's life, there is something dark about him that has lived on in his movement.

One can understand supporting Pinochet or General Park on the basis of anti-Communism. Hitler, well, if you read Mein Kampf you'd know better, but most people didn't.

@evan I recently learned of the Dual State concept. The normative state and the prerogative state. The latter starts small and targets the most vulnerable and most-easily othered groups.

The normative state gets shrunk and the prerogative state grows.

Also related is Doctorow's shitty technology adoption curve (not related to enshittification).

@evan Being an antisemite wouldn't even put him outside the law. Would put him outside decency, but not the law.
