Save Social Media From Billionaire Capture: freeourfeeds.com?

"But it will take independent funding and governance to turn Bluesky’s underlying tech—the AT Protocol—into something more powerful than a single app."

I see the executive director and president of Mozilla Foundation as their technical advisors, no surprise. But it surprises me to have the executive director of the Social Web Foundation (@swf) there.

Any thoughts, @evan ?

It also surprised me to see Jimmy Wales, Founder of Wikipedia, involved.

@everton137 Does the Mozilla Foundation even exist at this point? Didn't they just cut back their investment in ActivityPub to like nothing, taking multiple large instances and a client or two down with them?

Would be an interesting move to abandon all of that for ATProto

@countablenewt that's why it doesn't surprise me. But the executive director of the Social Web Foundation?

Föderation EN Mo 13.01.2025 21:21:49

@everton137 I guess for steering? I don't know

The SWF is definitely an ActivityPub thing, so mixing in ATProto is odd, but it could be in regards to bridging/compatibility

Really I feel like ATProto is wasting time that could be better spent on already established protocols, but such is life

@everton137 @swf tl;dr is that SWF focuses on the Fediverse, but we want to support this effort to make the AT Proto network more open and participative. And we'd probably help directly or indirectly if they try to make the AT Proto network better connected to the Social Web.

@everton137 @swf you never replied. Did I answer your question?

Föderation EN Di 04.02.2025 10:13:40

@evan @swf somehow yes. But I have to read more details on this project. To be honest, I'm a bit pessimistic after what you told me about the origins of Bluesky.

Föderation EN Di 04.02.2025 10:18:15

@everton137 @swf lol. Yeah, if you're not involved in Bluesky already, you don't need to look at it. It's for opening up their network.

@everton137
To be honest: Whats the best possible turn that bluesky can take. It's just another capital driven company doing platforming. AT-Protocol, in my limited understanding reeks of broadcasting+ instead of peer2peer based federation. I get that diversity in our protocolls and ecosystem is healthy, but is bluesky the company that addes diversity or is it just like threads? a company grabbing the cheap content of the fedi?
