@fatboy@fosstodon.org I've been thinking of this idea for a long time: "why won't servers just check if encryption is used to filter out spam? No spammer would probably be able to use that at a profitable scale"

Glad
@delta@chaos.social is doing that idea in a way!

@mima @fatboy Probably, before Autocrypt and DC's pervasive use of it, blocking non-encrypted mails would be too detrimental to day-to-day experiences. But yes, the basic idea would have been useful to explore 1-2 decades ago, already.

@delta@chaos.social Yeah it definitely would be too strict if all unencrypted messages were filtered out on all servers

But on another hand I wonder if we could've made use of open SMTP relays instead of letting it just be a problem by simply allowing only mails from there that are PGP-encrypted. That's actually the reason why it has been in my mind for a long time. We could've kept a pretty nice, simple, and inexpensive way of hiding one's IP address in emails. Imagine totally legit PGP'd mails being relayed from toad.com in 2023...

@mima @fatboy an interesting point. Chatmail instances are not that far away from opereating as such an openpgp-only relay -- could be a nice relaxed afternoon thing of modifying the repo to launch as such an open relay that only permits strict e2e-formatted mails (encoded here btw github.com/deltachat/chatmail/ )

@delta@chaos.social That would be awesome! I'm looking forward to it. :D (And I did realize just when I posted my reply that what you're doing is pretty much one or two steps away from being a real open relay lol)

The only problem I guess is how email servers would react to such relays... I'm not even sure if we could satisfy SPF and other anti-spam measures the mainstream use. Might be worth a note to operators to run the relay on a separate IP (or even IP range, anti-spam in email is so damn ridiculous it can even cause collateral damage)

@mima @fatboy maybe it's interesting enough to let chatmail services relay messages for each other. anyway an interesting and open background-brewing question of how 2024 will evolve in terms of upcoming chatmail services ;)
