Föderation EN Di 04.04.2023 22:19:52 I don't think we give this cinema moment enough credit for the impact it had on Gen X's worldview Medien: 1 |
Föderation EN Mi 05.04.2023 00:04:43 @flargh It’s such a terrific movie (and a bit odd). |
Föderation EN Mi 05.04.2023 04:36:37 @michaelgemar @flargh that movie was basically responsible for my current career. |

Föderation EN Mi 05.04.2023 01:49:33 @flargh @zebpalmer absolutely a huge cultural landmark, but oh, IF ONLY more people had ALSO taken away “Do NOT use $NAME_OF_LOVED_ONE as your password. Do you want global thermonuclear war, because that’s how you get global thermonuclear wars” |
Föderation EN Mi 05.04.2023 02:15:01 @flargh That, and I'd add the Kobayashi Maru simulation in Star Trek: The Wrath of Khan released the previous year. Some will have taken away that winning means ignoring the rules. Some will have taken away winning means not playing. Some will have managed to meld the two films' lessons, ie. if the rules said you must be present to win, they weren't. |
Föderation EN Mi 05.04.2023 02:22:47 @flargh Not just Gen X and not just their view of the world. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WarGames#Influence |
Föderation EN Mi 05.04.2023 02:40:27 @flargh we watched this for the nth time only the other day. Probably a better Broderick movie than Ferris. |
Föderation EN Mi 05.04.2023 03:01:38 @flargh But it also taught us Gen-Xers that even an almost sentient computer can be defeated with logic. Too bad we can’t defeat narcissists and Republicans with logic. Stupid is as stupid does. |
Föderation EN Mi 05.04.2023 03:06:53 @flargh I often annoy my kid by saying 'shall we play a game' in a stilted computer voice. |

Föderation EN Mi 05.04.2023 18:35:06 @flargh I showed it to my fourteen and ten year olds recently and they LOVED it. Holds up remarkably well. |
Föderation EN Mi 05.04.2023 18:50:22 @flargh More than that: "The only winning move is not to play" is a genuinely brilliant and memorable summary that has many applications beyond that in the film. For example, "working down the ladder" in academic journal submissions: see https://svpow.com/2013/03/19/the-only-winning-move-is-not-to-play/ |
Föderation EN Mi 05.04.2023 18:54:41 @flargh You're right. I've been thinking about this a lot over the last couple of weeks as we watch these large language models explode in use. |

Föderation EN Do 06.04.2023 14:18:46 @flargh excellent, I'll check it out :) |
Föderation EN Do 06.04.2023 14:22:45 @Theorem_Poem To get a snapshot of the Gen X late Cold War 80s teen zeitgeist, I'd pair this with Red Dawn as a double feature. They came out about one year from another, both during Reagan's first term in office. |
Föderation EN Do 06.04.2023 14:36:39 @flargh Oh, I'd love to know. I was born in '87 in an Indian small town, so my only understanding of USA in the 80s was acid washed jeans, hair metal and shoulder pads (all of those reached us in the mid-90s 😅) But now, as I talk to people online, Gen X is def my fave generation - chill and resourceful. Let me watch this and hopefully this will further my understanding. |

Föderation EN So 12.11.2023 16:01:43 @flargh At my work recently we were all asked "what movie defined your generation." Everyone expected me to say "The Godfather" because it's my favorite movie but I said "War Games." (Godfather not my gen anyways.) It was a good pull. |

Föderation EN Mi 22.11.2023 18:43:57 @flargh You know, there is something to that… we grew up with the certainty that, if conflict started between NATO and the Warsaw Pact, we were all dead. So we see old men’s madness now, in Ukraine, in the Middle East, and we are left to marvel at the hubris and folly of it all. |
