Föderation EN Do 13.02.2025 02:28:10 If you are an American married woman (or any gender person who has changed their surname legally) you need to be aware of this NOW. You may lose your right to vote if you don’t prepare. https://www.glamour.com/story/save-act-could-stop-millions-women-voting Not an exaggeration, not hyperbole. Millions of people, mostly women, turned away to vote. |

Föderation EN Do 13.02.2025 02:39:50 @hacks4pancakes We should do what Italy does: a woman keeps her own name forever. I had to jump through all manner of hoops to get my Italian citizenship because my American passport was in my married name. |
Föderation EN Do 13.02.2025 03:05:38 @gparenti @hacks4pancakes Some do. If we go by the statistic in the article I guess that would be 21%. Obviously not enough of course. My suspicion is that if the nazi party -- I mean the Republicans -- manage to get this to pass they'll also go after women who kept their name next. They'll give it some intentionally misleading name like "traditional marriage name fidelity" or some crap like that to try to slip it through. |
Föderation EN Do 13.02.2025 05:43:10 Second this: It's a *choice* (as in many other countries), not the default, and most change their name. |
Föderation EN Do 13.02.2025 05:37:46 @gparenti @hacks4pancakes that's the exact thought that crossed my mind. Italy's bureaucracies do tons of things wrong but this is one thing that's right IMO. |
Föderation EN Do 13.02.2025 02:46:57 @hacks4pancakes And I thought they just wanted to go back to the 1950s… |

Föderation EN Do 13.02.2025 02:53:55 @hacks4pancakes Well, hell, if their "populism" explosion continues, and this keeps more MAGA idiots from voting ... ? ;) |
Föderation EN Do 13.02.2025 03:33:55 @WeirdXmas Sadly, women vote slightly more liberal than men, especially young women. And these laws will impact everyone, even in blue states with good voter protections. |
Föderation EN Do 13.02.2025 04:07:31 @hacks4pancakes @WeirdXmas Married people vote more conservative than single people and the gap among women is bigger than among men, plus among married women the more conservative ones are more likely to change their names, so the effect on married women is Republicans shooting themselves in the foot, but the bill is horrible. The effect on people with disabilities of having to apply in person barely gets mentioned but it's huge, plus strong correlation between wealth & access to documents. |

Föderation EN Do 13.02.2025 03:29:56 A good moment for me to make my (generally futile) reminder that a #MarriedName is an #AdoptedName / #AssumedName that is recognised by tradition and convention, and is not the same as a #LegalName. If one obtains a #LegalChangeOfName there are additional filings (and sometimes fees, affadavits, etc) with the local #VitalStats / #Registries office, which will also result in an amendment to the name on any #BirthCertificates issued thereafter. |
Föderation EN Do 13.02.2025 05:04:37 @likelyjanlukas @hacks4pancakes I have NOT seen US counties ( specifically Sangamon & Cook, Illinois) in Illinois back record name changes to birth certificate records for marital events. In the US, a marriage certificate and divorce decrees will count for legal name change purposes, and US state and federal IDs can be changed based on marriage/divorce decrees. If you process a name change outside of marriage, that’s a different ball of wax. |
Föderation EN Do 13.02.2025 03:45:01 There was a video AOC put out earlier this week. She mentioned that ppl who watch the fake Fox news call/contact their reps about an average of 8 times more than any other party. The contact/calls measure the public motivation....meaning more motivated voters come election time. She also mentioned if you're in a red state our voices matter the most. I have been making calls all week to all my GOP (🤮) reps. I use the scripts from 5 calls. |
Föderation EN Do 13.02.2025 04:44:47 @themelissadamas Me too...I do 5 calls a day and today I made 10 calls and could not get through... that made me happy... |

Föderation EN Do 13.02.2025 04:43:13 @hacks4pancakes Gerrymandering but next next level and on personal level. What’s the most legal way to start a facial regime? Prevent people with wrong opinions to vote via legal changes. And interpret laws in a way that a president is immune regardless what they do at the office. (Remember how one president was on trial over having sex at the office - those were the days I miss, that was much much closer the level of accountability governing should have. ) |
Föderation EN Do 13.02.2025 04:51:13 @rpsu Things happen in just muted enough drastic changes that people can normalize it while being traumatized and just get lost in sports or movies or whatever |

Föderation EN Do 13.02.2025 06:28:44 @hacks4pancakes I'm seeing lots of folks saying that there's nothing in the text of the bill that says a driver's license with your married name won't work. |
Föderation EN Do 13.02.2025 06:31:41 @sarah_geri Real ID may, depending on how they play it, but that has costs and requirements associated with it, too. |
Föderation EN Do 13.02.2025 07:01:00 @hacks4pancakes REAL ID, as developed in my state anyway (AL) doesn't include that info (and btw I don't have the docs to get THAT, either, bc ex hubs has my birth & marriage certificates). Text of bill says ID has to match REAL ID requirements *and also* state U.S. citizenship. None of the examples I've seen so far do that; maybe somewhere?? |
