pro-compassion, therefore:
anti-bigotry, anti-fascism, anti-puritanism

I'll listen to you if you'll listen to me.

As an active pacifist, I try to separate people from their toxic beliefs.

I write open source software for human rights.

I'm looking for work as a Senior Software Engineer. Network programmer since 1990, with a Web focus. I've implemented many protocols and designed some too.  Worked on early RFCs; wrote seminal tutorials on Web tech; wrote the first anti-censorship proxy, CGIProxy, in 1996. I have a ton of experience in many different business contexts, including running a small USG-funded NGO from 2011-2019. My main languages are Go, JavaScript (Node.JS/client-side), Perl, Python, and Rust, but I learn quickly and can pick up other tech as needed. Good at teaching. Record of solving hard problems creatively. Can manage if needed, but I'd rather be doing technical work.

Open to permanent or contract, full or part time. Need to work from home. Ideally I'd work in public interest technology (PIT), but can do corporate work too. Available immediately.

DM me here, email james@jmarshall.com, or Signal at jamesmarshall.02 .

Thank you for any leads! 😊

@RickiTarr beautiful story! I was in Lisbon this spring during their 50-year anniversary of the coup that overthrew fascism, ushered in democracy, and ended the colonial wars. I got the sense that almost everyone there is still against fascism, and that their flag is more a unifying symbol than one of nationalism (like the US flag can be), so this doesn't surprise me.

That's just this tourist's impression... I welcome any corrections as always!

@evan I agree, and I'm pushing for a ceasefire myself. However, it leaves some major open issues: What about the hostages? and How can Israel ensure hamas doesn't attack more, as is hamas' stated intention?

I'm genuinely looking for answers to these, but haven't seen any ideas. I'm guessing that if reasonable solutions were offered, there would be more support for a ceasefire within Israel, which is probably where it matters the most.

I'm *not* saying the current bombing and invasion of Gaza help either of these issues; in fact, I think they make both issues worse, and are breeding immeasurable, global anti-Israel sentiment. But I do think those are understandable questions asked by those who aren't supporting a ceasefire. Yes, it would all be easier if Netanyahu hadn't treated Palestinians so badly in the past, but we can't change the past.

Long-term peace seems impossible as long as either hamas or Netanyahu is in power, since they both actively oppose peace. They have that in common. :(

@davidslifka to everyone not liking this post:

Look, I'm trying to escape capitalism just as much as anyone else, but the reality is that in today's godforsaken gladiator economy, funding can enable projects that wouldn't otherwise be able to do their thing. I'd love it if everyone could figure out how to get by outside of the money system, but today a lot of projects fail because the people doing it need to keep a roof over their head. To deny this is a *very* privileged viewpoint.

Just putting this out there--

I want to see an open source, surveillance-proof social media tool that supports private posting, i.e. to friends only. Others I know want this too.

Would anyone be interested in helping design this product? I'd love to see a collaborative discussion for it.

I'm especially interested in input from human rights activists worldwide, to learn which features are needed or wanted by them or others on the ground.

Digital Ocean provides a one-click installation of Mastodon, though I haven't used it. It may still require the command line for maintenance etc., I don't know.
