Fantastic range of answers, thank you everyone! I see a few recurring themes among all the great responses:

1. People really enjoy knowing they have a chronological feed that won't hide or downrank content from the people they follow. I'll add the "there's no ads" into this group.

2. Engagement is better. More engagement, better quality engagement, real people, real conversations.

3. Local or community governance and moderation. Rules that work in your local context.

Thank you everyone!

@jaz Not sure it's good marketing, but it's the best conversation forum since Usenet when it was the place to go. Much thanks to moderators for this!

@jaz counterpoint - a lot of folks I talk to say they don’t get engagement on platforms. My perspective on that is that either they are expecting to “go viral” or get a lot of easy clicks, or that they don’t invest time in finding their communities and building an engaged following.

@andypiper @jaz I’d be lying if I said it didn’t take considerable time and dedication. I typically get more interaction in spaces like the Fediverse than almost any centralized platform, but I had to start from zero at one point, too.

In any community, you have to meet people where they’re at. You have to take time to get to know folks, and dive deep into the things you’re passionate about. You can’t get much success from faking it with engagement bait, or buying followers, or finding a way to game an algorithm.

Moving to the Fediverse is no different. Unless you’re already a major celebrity with a big following, upward traction will only come with patience and good faith engagement. Otherwise, it doesn’t pass the smell test.
