"Legacy code" is often code that you want to replace because you don't understand it. The problem is, before you can replace it, you need to understand it, and, once you understand it, replacing it is rarely the cheapest option any more.

20+ years ago, I worked on the client side of Cell Broadcast systems (they're essentially SMS with a special prefix, that are sent to all phones that are connected to a given tower). For USA folks who just got bothered by the emergency test, sorry.

I asked ChatGPT to write some assembly code. It is still hilariously wrong, exactly in the way you'd expect someone to copy code fragments a few lines at a time without any understanding about the way they work.

So, no, LLMs aren't capable of replacing human programmers yet, no anywhere close. But they're a great reminder for experienced programmers about the kind of code that beginners might produce.
