Have you ever wished the browser would look at a background color and pick black or white for the text — whichever one provides more contrast? Now, the `contrast-color()` function in CSS does just that.

Does anyone have any example of websites that are using SVG for their icons?

Just plain icons? Does anyone make responsive icons? Light/dark icons?

How important is this to you? Would you rely on it if it were more deeply supported?

Are you excited for masonry layouts in CSS? Wondering what’s happening?

Well, a third option is emerging. One that unifies the `flex-flow` and `grid-auto-flow` properties into a whole new mechanism — Item Flow.

Learn what it is, and what it means for Flexbox and Grid in webkit.org/blog/16587/item-flo

There it is! Finally, a real solution for how to style all of the HTML form controls using your own custom CSS to change anything — building on an interoperable UA set of defaults. It only took 30 years!

First will be the chance to style the “in-page” controls (the part embedded in the webpage), plus the popover for <select> (the part that appears “over top of” the page). Later we’ll do popovers for more things — like the date picker, etc.

If you have experience designing and/or coding typography in CSS for the web, what do you find most annoying? What’s hard to do? What’s impossible?

Web developers and designers,

What are you hoping to see at WWDC next week??

Dear people who make websites,

Do you ever block your users from being able to paste into a text field?

Why?

Do you need this ability for a good reason? What’s that reason?

Or, as a user, would you like to see it go away? Perhaps you encounter sites that prevent you from pasting your super complex password from your password manager into a password field, and wonder why they can do so?

What might be the downside of removing support of disallowing pasting from the web?

Listening to @Meyerweb on Syntax.fm...

About `color-mix()`... It's not coming in the future. It's already here!

Safari shipped `color-mix()` in Safari 16.2, in Dec 2022.

I showed how it works in "What's new in CSS" at WWDC23. developer.apple.com/videos/pla

Color mix was also part of Interop 2023, and shipped in Chrome and Firefox in the spring of 2023.

Yes, you heard that right. Web apps on Mac, from Safari. *Any* website can be added to your Dock, and opened as a web app. Web app developers can customize their web app with a web manifest file and more — just like for web apps on iOS and iPadOS. Stay tuned for all the details later this week.

To every person who’s posting some kind of 2022 year-in-review with any version of: oh I’m so happy 2022 was the year the pandemic ended / we got to travel again / things went back to normal…

Ok, listen. First, the pandemic is not over. It’s as bad as ever. People are NOT safe unmasked, indoors, in public — they are simply brainwashed into thinking it’s safe to get COVID over & over. (The science is clear it’s not. If you “disagree”, please go look at some recent statistical data.)

Second…
