Here are the results of my "What is your favorite browser?" survey, here on Mastodon. These are some very interesting results.

It is clear that the incumbents are not getting a lot of love. Edge gets 2% and Chrome gets 5%. These browsers are widely used, but not very popular, based on this survey.

Safari does a lot better at 16%, the same as Vivaldi. The enthusiasm level from those that use Vivaldi is high and plenty of people also mention Vivaldi as a secondary option.

Opera gets just 1%.

Firefox gets 60%, so clearly a strong showing here in the Fediverse, although many say they use Firefox only because they do not want to use a Chromium based browser.

The cool part is then that 13% say they prefer another browser. Plenty of smaller browsers getting a mention, which is nice.

If you notice that the total is higher than 100%, then that is because I allowed people to select more than one browser, although most did not.

If you are still using Chrome or Edge, maybe it is time to try something new? You have a choice!

@jon cool to see that Vivaldi is well accepted. Where would Vivaldi stand today on a worldwide level? I can't find it on gs.statcounter.com/browser-mar

It's probably included in Chrome or 'Other'?

@jon I use Google chrome and have no issues with it. I suspect most people use the browser their equipment comes with and do not care too much about it, so the survey results only reflect people who feel very strongly about it. Still some surprising results.

@michel416

It is true a lot of people just use what they are given and it does not help when OS vendors make it really hard to try out alternatives or warn against them.

How about trying something better?

Föderation EN Di 19.11.2024 19:33:05

@jon I'm excited about the Servo project: servo.org
They're also on the fediverse: floss.social/@servo

I really think more engine diversity is a good thing.

Föderation EN Di 19.11.2024 20:12:21

@roger @jon
Yeah, one of the reasons I loved the original Opera was that it had its own engine and other quirks. Some of those quirks are in Vivaldi now but it's still a Chromium browser.

@TFFPrisoner @roger

I hope you still use us.

@jon One thing that bothers me with Vivaldi that Opera gets right is the way text boxes are treated. When I'm writing a forum post and change tabs, the cursor will remain where it was and I can just resume typing in Opera. Not so in Vivaldi, I always have to click into the text window again first.

Seems I'm not the only one: forum.vivaldi.net/topic/82108/

@TFFPrisoner

This is a bug and should be fixed. If focus does not go back to where it was, then that is a bug.

@jon Yet another web dev here. Just wanted to say (and thank you for) that I firmly believe that @Vivaldi is, hands down, the absolute best browser out there, for most people at least, despite having voted for Firefox, which I still use as my daily driver (despite Mozilla's best efforts to the contrary) simply to avoid ending with a browser engine mono-culture. We all know how well things went the last time we ended with one (circa IE6 era) but I do love Vivaldi to pieces, truth be told.

Föderation PL Di 19.11.2024 20:01:03

@jon Next time, please you add Brave browser. It's pretty cool. But, if you repair adblock in Vivaldi, then Your browser is the Best in my opinion.

Föderation EN Di 19.11.2024 20:10:48

@jon I've been with @ArcBrowser for some weeks (2-3months) and my experience was mixed. Suffering the Windows side of things, and surprised by the efficient UI. I decided to switch finally for Firefox, setting the Vertical Tab Flag feature. Not perfect, but still feeling on the edge (not Edge :-) )

Föderation EN Di 19.11.2024 20:17:47

@jon Are more smaller, lesser-known browsers really a good choice? I always have doubts when people switch to the latest new shiny browser that nobody knows about. Browsers have access to a lot of sensitive data, like passwords. The next shiny new browser could always also be a scam.

Föderation EN Di 19.11.2024 22:42:45

@gumbario

I think it is always prudent to be careful with your choice of software. On the other hand, if you know that the browser you use is collecting your data, maybe it is OK to look at alternatives?

Overall I think competition is a good thing. It brings progress. Think about how the browser market would be if the only choice was IE/Edge?

Föderation EN Di 19.11.2024 20:41:45

@jon I would have guessed Firefox would be lower and Other would be higher. But that just might be my own bias.

Föderation EN Di 19.11.2024 23:00:12

@jon
> only because they do not want to use a Chromium based browser.

Completely legit, this was the reason I switched 5 years ago. Didn't want a chromium based browser, that will eventually turn off manifest v2.
Luckily forks with workarounds were made, but I got so used to firefox that I see no reason to go back!

Föderation EN Mi 20.11.2024 07:51:24

@jon Fascinating. I selected two! Firefox (should have gone other as I use Waterfox on Windows and Linux) but my main browser has and will be Safari as I daily drive a Mac to get stuff done.

Föderation EN Mi 20.11.2024 20:14:02

@jon
Thank you for your interesting survey.

Of course, such surveys cannot be representative, but they do show trends.

5027 participants are not exactly a small number.

Perhaps we will be able to recruit even more people from the 'Fediverse' for further surveys. ;-)

At least 'Vivaldi' has caught up with Apple's Safari.
But I would have liked to see a lot more in favour of Vivaldi.

Even if this can only ever be a snapshot.

I confess that I have "mobilised" something for Vivaldi. :tony_laughing:
Maybe it has made a difference.

I would have found it rather stupid if Vivaldi had been left behind Apple's Safari, especially on 'Mastodon'. :tony_smiling:

Further surveys will remain exciting.
