I switched away from Vivaldi because I heard the browser was chromium-based. Since Firefox is displaying their ass quite proudly, is worth switching back?

Föderation EN Sa 01.03.2025 18:45:09

@kidskylark i love vivaldi, no issues yet, but i’m no expert

Föderation EN Sa 01.03.2025 19:03:07

@vae Hey, that's totally fair though. Do you use any extensions?

Föderation EN Sa 01.03.2025 19:04:14

@kidskylark i have raindrop, an obsidian clipper, watch2gether and i use the stock feed reader that’s included. not much!

Föderation EN Sa 01.03.2025 18:53:39

@kidskylark Worried about security or privacy with a chromium fork? I use Vivaldi as my second string browser, when Safari won’t work for a captcha or something.

Föderation EN Sa 01.03.2025 19:06:19

@johnlehet Both are concerns, plus a little kindergarten-style "I'll take my ball and go home" pettiness of hating Google. Do you like Vivaldi when you use it? Do you use any extensions?

Föderation EN Sa 01.03.2025 19:19:44

@kidskylark I even have connections to google.com blocked from my Mac with Little Snitch — I hate it that much. No extensions on Vivaldi, as they would come from the chrome store I think? Which means no 1Password.

I like it fine. It always renders pages and never misbehaves.

Mac safari is my main browser, and it misbehaves a lot, probably because of privacy and security settings. But still it’s the main browser.

Föderation EN Sa 01.03.2025 19:12:39

@kidskylark I highly recommend Vivaldi! It's feature packed and the company is amazing.

Föderation EN Sa 01.03.2025 19:14:14

@mathieulefrancois Yeah, I do appreciate that they maintain a presence on Fedi as well. Do you use any extensions?

Föderation EN Sa 01.03.2025 19:16:37

@kidskylark I try to limit my extensions to the minimum. I have Proton Pass because that's what I use as my password manager, but that's it.

Föderation EN Sa 01.03.2025 19:19:37

@mathieulefrancois Ah, gotcha. Not quite my style then, I have a bunch of extensions, including ad/tracker blockers and others.

I may check it out but I'm also very interested in the Tor browser, which I haven't used before.

Föderation EN Sa 01.03.2025 19:26:35

@kidskylark You can run any Chrome extensions on Vivaldi...

Vivaldi's adblocker is pretty good, you can import lists to beef it up too though

Föderation EN Sa 01.03.2025 19:27:35

@mathieulefrancois from chrome store, though, means that ublock is no longer available, correct? Google made a big hullabaloo about banning/removing it

Föderation EN Sa 01.03.2025 22:10:47

@kidskylark that's correct yes. The built in adblocker on Vivaldi works pretty well though.

@kidskylark what do you have to reply to this @jon ? Is worth switching back to it ? How the browser is different from the based Chromium (like removing all related to Google tracking).

I ask because since yesterday I give another try to @Vivaldi

Föderation FR So 02.03.2025 02:18:23

@dominic @kidskylark @Vivaldi

Obviously I believe Vivaldi is a better choice, but in earnest, the only way to find out is to try it.

You can start by having a look at our Webpage, where there is a lot of details as to what sets Vivaldi apart:

vivaldi.com/desktop/
vivaldi.com/android/
vivaldi.com/ios/

Or if you like, you can read about some of the things we stand for:

@jon @kidskylark @Vivaldi thank you Jon. I will read all these things tomorrow. 👍

@jon @dominic @kidskylark @Vivaldi ce que je déplore de Vivaldi c'est que le résultats des recherches sont en anglais
