Not only is one German state moving from Microsoft to LibreOffice, but the whole federal government is committing to move to open standards by 2027: blog.documentfoundation.org/bl

Medien: 1

Föderation EN Di 29.04.2025 10:56:22

@libreoffice Excellent! Not just because they're moving to LibreOffice, but because they're doing the exercise of moving in the first place. A major reason why organizations stick with bad tech is because they don't know how to lift & shift.

Föderation EN Di 29.04.2025 10:57:22

@libreoffice just wish my university would let us submit assignments in .ODF format, as we can only really use Word... and as a Linux user that means Word Online, which is slow and clunky.

Föderation EN Di 29.04.2025 11:02:31

@toran Oh no! Ask your uni why they won't accept standardised formats, and force students to use specific software. It's the exact opposite of what unis should be doing. If they say "We use Microsoft Office/365", point out that Microsoft also supports ODF so they should at least accept documents in that format!

Föderation EN Di 29.04.2025 11:42:13

@libreoffice
Microsoft support to odf is poor.
@toran

Föderation EN Di 29.04.2025 12:01:15

@libreoffice I'll try, ta... they're heavily invested in the MS ecosystem, as we're given 365 accounts on sign up.

Didn't know that Word also opens .odf files, so will ask them about it. Ta! 🙂

Föderation EN Di 29.04.2025 11:04:19

@libreoffice Thanks. Can you also share a reference to the source document that contains this decision?

Föderation EN Di 29.04.2025 11:05:58

@bartknubben It's linked to in the blog post: "More information (in German) on this page."

Föderation EN Di 29.04.2025 11:07:06

@libreoffice
Thank you in the interests of all, except the overpowering large corporations! ✌️ 🍀

Föderation EN Di 29.04.2025 11:45:18

@libreoffice That's fine. But let's hope that the new government doesn't pull out ... (the paper is from March, the new government will be installed in May.)

Föderation FR Di 29.04.2025 12:00:02

@libreoffice ils ont mis du temps avant de comprendre

Föderation EN Di 29.04.2025 12:21:33

@libreoffice this is great, I really hope the rest of the world follows. Thanks for doing what you do!

Föderation EN Di 29.04.2025 12:21:54

@libreoffice is the "Standardisierungsboard" thats tasked with enacting this framework @FITKOfoederal?

Föderation EN Di 29.04.2025 12:25:35

@libreoffice Wait until the new German government is in place, then re-check. I have a nagging feeling this change might be stopped soon.

Föderation EN Di 29.04.2025 12:29:38

@libreoffice

How is interoperability these days? The last was 8 years ago.

Föderation DE Di 29.04.2025 12:38:14

@libreoffice

I will believe it after it is done.
Not before.

Föderation EN Di 29.04.2025 12:50:34

@libreoffice Great stuff! Way to go!

Föderation EN Di 29.04.2025 13:21:35

@libreoffice which means, they will stick with MS and just change the default format ...

Föderation EN Di 29.04.2025 13:29:46

@libreoffice I really hope that as they make the move they are also donating to the Open Source alternatives they are using.

Föderation EN Di 29.04.2025 13:46:10

@libreoffice I love you LibreOffice !

Föderation EN Di 29.04.2025 13:57:17

@libreoffice If only the UK government does the same.

Föderation EN Di 29.04.2025 14:04:04

@libreoffice a new government will be formed in the following weeks.

I doubt they will stick to it. They are not the kind of people who don't listen to rich lobbyists.

Föderation EN Di 29.04.2025 14:05:55

@libreoffice Hope they don't change their mind in the meantime.

Föderation EN Di 29.04.2025 14:28:48

@libreoffice Congratulations 🎉 Maybe little known: the German federal government was required to be able to process ODF since 2010 already: cio.bund.de/SharedDocs/downloa

> Das bedeutet,
dass die Bundesverwaltung bis zum 01. Januar 2010 in der Lage sein wird,
Dokumente im Format ODF zu empfangen, zu bearbeiten, zu erstellen und zu
versenden.

(wasn't easy to get this into place)

Föderation EN Di 29.04.2025 14:34:40

@libreoffice They seem to be standardising on ODF, not LibreOffice per se. Since MS Office also "supports" ODF (badly) I predict a longterm win for Microsoft. Either they'll just stick to it and endure the bad ODF support, or they'll erroneously blame ODF and lament that "unfortunately there's no practical alternative".

Föderation EN Di 29.04.2025 15:22:50

@libreoffice Back to the roots.
Staroffice, the grandfather of Libre office, was born in Germany ~40 years ago. Despite several semi-successful conversion attempts, I hope this time the transformation will be permanent.

Föderation EN Di 29.04.2025 15:40:21

@libreoffice oh wow, I know that the Dutch gov is implementing opensource as well (using La Suite and OpenDesk) but MS's office suite is the biggest hurdle to replacing Office365. Maybe this will finally become an option? @opensource

Föderation EN Di 29.04.2025 16:04:08

@libreoffice @nixCraft can we please all move to LibreOffice please, please, pretty please 🙏

Föderation EN Di 29.04.2025 16:30:27

@libreoffice I'm not sure how far that will go.

Föderation EN Di 29.04.2025 17:03:32

@libreoffice I love Linux Now😬

Föderation EN Di 29.04.2025 17:31:30

@libreoffice
Sorry, but unfortunately it's not quite that rosy. It's only a small federal state that is changing over. I could share the euphoria more if it were one of the big states in the south of Germany.
Unfortunately, the city of Munich switched back to Microsoft when they built their German office there 😒

Föderation EN Di 29.04.2025 17:39:48

@libreoffice I want to see some kind of documentary or interview on how this has changed their work and what they like and don't like about it.

Föderation EN Di 29.04.2025 18:00:20

@libreoffice Nice! I hope other EU members do the same

Föderation EN Di 29.04.2025 18:07:12

@libreoffice I hope to see real steps in this right direction of independence from corporations and a better and free experience for citizens

Föderation EN Di 29.04.2025 18:34:24

@libreoffice about time! we always said closed source is a glaring security issue, and here we are now.

Föderation EN Di 29.04.2025 18:57:52

@libreoffice Open standards? They probably mean Office "Open" XML.

Föderation EN Di 29.04.2025 19:23:01

@libreoffice wenn die deutschen Bundesbehörden wirklich bis 2027 den Wechsel zu vornehmen - wow. Das wäre Fortschritt
