I saw someone complaining recently about the latest Mastodon update because it now shows a follower count when you get notified of a new follower.

I absolutely understand the reasoning for their complaint. Chasing clout is problematic, to say the least.

But, on the other hand... I really like this feature for the exact opposite reason. It lets me know when someone is unlikely to interact.

I know that someone with 20k followers isn't going to respond to anything I post, even if it is directed at them. That is fine. I don't blame them of course, it is just a matter of scale... but at the same time, I don't want to waste my time and effort.

Embrace lower follower counts! That's where conversations actually happen!

@m it's why I hang back with yall. And I mean it enduringly. Like, at what point do I actually start limiting followers legitimately. (Not a prob atm) That seems like a good topic, for me I would be different if I had 20k followers. I don't know how or why, but I can see that I would be, and that is icky to me. But now I recognize it, so would it happen? Grahh!! 20k or bust! Or not. I don't care! LoL 😆 It might do the opposite and give ultimate 20k level validation... 🤔 ok no, not that path.

@thejikz I figure I'm very unlikely to ever have to worry about that lol

I feel the exact same way. I don't usually follow folks with high follower counts as they often post a LOT and clutter up my feed with, well... basically just noise.

I dont equate quantity to quality but apparently some do, no doubt helped along by the algorithms encouragement in other places prior to coming here.
