Föderation EN Fr 03.05.2024 17:53:17 So apparently we've hit that 30% chance after all and #Bluesky didn't die before they allowed a bridge to run, who'd have guessed? 🤔 Somebody plz ping Evan about this - I'm not on Threads, I don't like commercial social media platforms 😈 |
Föderation EN Fr 03.05.2024 18:47:58 @mackuba@martianbase.net what's your point? guessing this isn't that recent and I'm not sure 30% was a particularly unrealistic prediction considering most startups fail and we've already seen multiple twitter replacements fail too. |
Föderation EN Fr 03.05.2024 18:52:13 @mackuba@martianbase.net also, I'm sure you know @evan@cosocial.ca has a non-threads fediverse account too even though he happened to post that message to threads so there is no need to ping him on threads only. |
Föderation EN Fr 03.05.2024 19:00:50 @vetehinen @evan It's from February, around the time when they enabled open signups and shortly before they enabled third party PDSes for limited testing. I saved it because I've been tracking the progress of Bluesky closely since last spring, I know what devs are working on, and at that point I could have bet real money that they would enable bridges like this in the next few months. Implying that they'd somehow maliciously block it meant that someone doesn't know that much about Bluesky. |
Föderation EN Fr 03.05.2024 19:09:42 @mackuba@martianbase.net well I think even some Bluesky team member said they can understand why fediverse people would be suspicious of their motives so I don't see it as all that unfair or whatever. |
Föderation EN Fr 03.05.2024 20:11:51 @mackuba @vetehinen They definitely did block federation with other nodes, and disallowed bridges. The fact that we're talking about new bridges existing is because they have been disallowed up until now. I really appreciate the work going into bridging with Bluesky and Nostr. I still think that bridges are not going to be important long term. The momentum is with ActivityPub. |
Föderation EN Fr 03.05.2024 20:48:10 @evan @vetehinen I mean, they weren't blocking bridges specifically I think? (Were they any attempts other than Snarfed's?) - they just hadn't enabled federation at all yet at that point. I think there's a difference between "they are blocking bridges" and "federation isn't working yet"… It wasn't enabled because it wasn't ready yet, but they had announced late last year that it would be enabled in early 2024, and it was, all according to plan (actually earlier than I expected myself). |
Föderation EN Fr 03.05.2024 22:05:34 @mackuba Have they said anything about the timeframe for supporting larger nonPDSs yet? Right now it's a very narrow bridge. @evan at least in the short term I think bridges are going to play a very important role. And bridges aren't just across protocol, #Threads connection with the fediverse is very bridge-like, with people opting-in, getting reminded that it's not the same as Threads itself, and different behavior for bridged posts. And once APIs and PDSs open up, depending on Threads' policies I wouldn't be surprised to see bridges from the ATmosphere to and from Threads. |
Föderation EN Fr 03.05.2024 23:04:57 @thenexusofprivacy @evan @vetehinen Well, the Bridgy PDS has ~500 accounts right now, so I'm assuming they've turned off the limit for that PDS; there hasn't been any announcement about removing it completely, but I think someone mentioned somewhere that it would be replaced with a limit of new users / day soon (not sure how high). |
Föderation EN Fr 03.05.2024 19:31:58 @mackuba who, who could have predicted? that's great. |
