I am an amateur mathematician, but not the angle-trisecting kind.

Can you guess what language Mastodon wants to translate this from?

This post from the front page of Hacker News begins “Everybody hates working on legacy projects, myself included.”

Uh, I don't, I like working on legacy projects.

I consider myself primarily a maintenance programmer.

I enjoy the challenge of taking a big messy codebase and making it less messy while making it do more things. It's like wiggling out of a straitjacket.

Surely I'm not the only one?

If I post a blog URL to Mastodon, it immediately gets hits from hundreds or thousands of Mastodon servers worldwide.

You know what doesn't get hits? robots.txt .

That seems like an oversight.

A good thing to do this time of year is to donate money to your local food bank.

There is a lot of surplus food around that would just go to waste. For example, unsold supermarket produce. The food bank collects this food (sometimes for free, sometimes for cheap) and then redistributes it to people who need food.

A cash donation of $1 typically enables them to deliver about $5 of food to hungry people. This is an efficient use of your charity dollar.

The Philadelphia food bank is Philabundance. philabundance.org/ They spend about 5% of their budget on fundraising, 5% on management, and 90% of buying and delivering food. Other food banks are typical.

If you're looking for a target for local charitable donations, a food bank is a great default that you don't have to think hard about.

I'm looking for a job. I have 30 years of experience doing complex systems programming in many languages, most recently Typescript, Haskell, and Python. I learn quickly. I can do advanced mathematics.

This year I helped a company migrate 15,000 customers from another company into their own systems.

Last year I helped develop a differential privacy database product written in Haskell.

Before that I helped develop a laboratory information management system that tracked up to 30,000 Covid-19 tests per day.

I live in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA, but I have years of success working remotely. I can start January 1.

Please check out my CV.

Some manufacturing issue that made it significantly more expensive to die-cut a 57-card deck than a 55-card deck. Like: standard card manufacturing is set up to cut and package sets of 56 cards, which is a standard 52-card deck, two jokers, and two advertising, rules, or brand cards. A 55-card Dobble deck can include one surplus card but a 57-card deck is a special order.
