@mozilla
"We are approaching the use of AI in Firefox -- which many, many of you have been asking about --"
It seems to me, it's quite the opposite. Do you have numbers about people asking for AI in Firefox vs those who don't?

@Xzan @mozilla tbf alt text generation is good.

@mozilla lol did all the people actually read the article

> Weโ€™re looking at how we can use local, on-device AI models [...] One feature weโ€™re starting with next quarter is AI-generated alt-text for images inserted into PDFs, which makes it more accessible to visually impaired users [...].

This sounds pretty great actually, not the usual AI abomination we're seeing everywhere. As far as I know the new (beta) translate feature also uses AI (or a LLM) to translate without a cloud provider.

@mcbaumwolle @mozilla Nope, itโ€™s still "using a hammer to kill flies", so absolutely not any kind of AI Iโ€™d want them to work on.

Föderation EN Mo 10.06.2024 23:16:34

@masterbuck @mcbaumwolle @mozilla And how else would you solve this then?

Buck ๐ŸŒฑ

Föderation EN Mo 10.06.2024 23:58:30

@IamPic How about we stop using technology to solve social problems? The current ecological collapse is mainly due to our reflex of throwing tech at any problem humans are too lazy to solve intelligently. There are community-fed alt-text databases, for example, but mostly: if itโ€™s important, we should shun (like some Mastodon communities do) those who donโ€™t make the effort. But we donโ€™t, we spend minerals and kWh and water getting an approximative bad alt text using AI.

Föderation EN Do 20.06.2024 18:51:06

@masterbuck @IamPic and so we should just leave disabled people out to dry until every person and system online agree to use alt text on everything, everywhere? for some people, this problem requires a more immediate solution than what you may find acceptable.

Buck ๐ŸŒฑ

Föderation EN Do 20.06.2024 19:23:33

@DigitalJacobin @IamPic Letโ€™s see what this ends up being like, but if itโ€™s anything like all the other LLM implementations, disabled people will get a shitty useless feature that doesnโ€™t solve their problem, and we wonโ€™t be any closer to fixing the root problem.

@mozilla AI in Firefox should always be a separate downloadable option, not something that is pushed on anyone. AI has some limited applications, but for the most part it sucks big time.

@mozilla No-one asked for AI in Firefox.

There are much much, much, much, much more important things in the browser that need to be addressed, instead of shoving in the latest hype train nonsense.

"In alignment with our commitment to an open and accessible internet, Mozilla will reinstate previously restricted listings in Russia. Our initial decision to temporarily restrict these listings was made while we considered the regulatory environment in Russia and the potential risk to our community and staff.

As outlined in our Manifesto, Mozillaโ€™s core principles emphasize the importance of an internet that is a global public resource, open and accessible to all. Users should be free to customize and enhance their online experience through add-ons without undue restrictions.

By reinstating these add-ons, we reaffirm our dedication to:

Openness: Promoting a free and open internet where users can shape their online experience.

Accessibility: Ensuring that the internet remains a public resource accessible to everyone, regardless of geographical location.

We remain committed to supporting our users in Russia and worldwide and will continue to advocate for an open and accessible internet for all."

This seems reasonable, but I've never seen this line of thinking actually work โ€”ย instead of standing your ground and sending the right message, you just start giving up your liberties bit by bit โ€”ย Russia knows how to boil the frog slow very well.
This might buy some time, but they would still start forcing people off Firefox sooner or later.
Yandex' websites which are used by a lot of Russians are already giving you warning about Firefox no longer being supportedโ€ฆ
