Does anyone know if it's possible to reuse media? I don't want to burden the server by adding what is already there.

I know I can copy the link to a media file, but then it doesn't have a preview. Is there a way to achieve this? For instance, replying with an already present .png file so people can immediately see it instead of see just a link to the file?

@FediTips Maybe?

It's a really good idea, it has been suggested in the Mastodon Github site, but as far as I know it isn't possible (yet).

Nearest you could get is linking to the original post you posted the image in.

Thanks!
Too bad it's not possible yet. It would be nice to have a choice, when you click on the attachment button, between 'Upload File' and 'Browse Media' or something, and getting the preview.

Now, what I do, is indeed linking but to the image file. The post where I placed it would not always make sense in the thread 😂
Maybe I could create 'emtpy toots' with just the image in them, but that might cause a lot of questions 😊

Another possibility is if you can upload them as a gif on a site somewhere, if you include a link to a gif in the post it will embed it into the post on many (most?) interfaces.

I will try. Does it only work with GIF's though???

@pascaline

I'm not sure to be honest!

I just tested this and it only shows a link 🙁

Darn... There are a number of services where Mastodon will embed the link (PeerTube, Bandcamp, YouTube etc) but I'm not sure what the criteria are for whether the embedding works.

By the way, embedding can take a while to happen so it's worth reloading the post later to check if it works.

Yes, but the way Misskey handles it is just what I mean: it uses a 'Drive' for ones own media so items can be reused, which is wonderful because media don't have to be uploaded again, it doesn't burden the server, and it creates a preview. It's perfect, sigh ❤

I'm on a Sharkey instance which has media features usable with fixed "pages" (think long-form/ blog posts) and posts like this.
I can get to media I've used either by looking at a tab in my account for my posts containing media content or via a dedicated image library for my account, called "Drive" in the UI. I can upload or pull media from an url and store it in the Drive.

Nice, didn't know Sharkey did this!

It's terrific!
And it saves so much space!
