I work in QA for and also handle much of the release process for desktop products.

I generally favour very simple technologies that allow me to better understand and fix things. On the other hand Vivaldi is so powerful and permits so much flexibility, that I love it anyway. 😉

I am also a keen and a fan of other unusual simple cycles. for the win! 🚴

Still the best thing I ever did to allow me to check what versions of @Vivaldi we have out in public at any given time

finger vivaldiversion@happynetbox.com

Works on all desktop platforms.

Go on… finger Vivaldi yourself. 😉

So I just discovered that proprietary media (H.264, AAC, etc.) was not working with the Snap version of @Vivaldi on Linux—I mean .snap packages, not Snapshots.

I found this out as I attempted to use the Snap version to play a video and it failed. I am on vacation at the moment and not really monitoring our forums or bug tracker right now. I addition I do not usually use the Snap at home personally, so this was just by chance. 😱

On investigating, it seems that on 2024-12-17T13:39:10.926512+00:00 (last Tuesday) the "chromium-ffmpeg" snap package that we use to provide support for proprietary media was updated by Canonical and version 115541 (which we were still using) was removed entirely.

Since I can update things myself and most of my colleagues are likely asleep I have now switched the Vivaldi 7.0 Snap to use "chromium-ffmpeg-118887" (which Canonical offer now) and released this live as of 2024-12-23T00:03:01.156148+00:00. That seems to have resolved it for me. If anyone is using the Snap version of Vivaldi, could you also confirm (after a Snap refresh and a restart of the browser) that it works for you also.

There is a test video (with sound) here for you to check against:

Yep, that seems like a legit picture from @Vivaldi offices.

An office hallway with a Vivaldi banner and two unicycles present. One leaning on each wall.

One of my colleagues works remotely and used to do occasional testing on a . However the Mac he had was left lying around since it was stuck on 10.13 and hence has not been getting security updates since November 12, 2020 and has not even been usable with Vivaldi for a long while also.

We are sending him a newer Apple Silicon based Mac (since that would also allow easier testing of internal builds using iOS simulator) but in the mean time I pointed out that he could upgrade his current machine with , despite Apple preventing upgraded via the regular method.

He went all the way from 10.13, right up to macOS 15 without any obvious issues. Once again, it is silly that Apple is letting these working machines just be wasted.

I updated the @Vivaldi page on "Future browser updates on macOS 10.15 (Catalina) being discontinued, due to lack of support from Apple".

We now list an additional option for users who find themselves in this unfortunate position: "OpenCore Legacy Patcher".

Thanks to those of you who reached out mentioned having success with this.

The old macOS 10.15 machine I was using for testing Vivaldi has been upgraded, despite not supporting newer macOS versions.

It actually can run @Vivaldi 7.0 despite reports to the contrary you might have heard.

There was a problem with the spacing of letters next to the @Vivaldi logo in the main meeting area of our Iceland office.

We set our top designer on it right away. Thanks @atlemo, truely an amazing job! 🤩

The team is on a team building. While waiting for the ferry @Alacho realised he could "hack" the information kiosk and get Vivaldi installed.

I feel like @jon approves. 🤣
