Yesterday, I was asked to create a Docker server for specific software distributed as a Docker Compose file. I created an Alpine Linux VM, copied the Compose file, and ran it. Everything is working perfectly.
This morning, the person who provided the file asked me about the Ubuntu version of the VM. When I replied that it's an Alpine Linux host, they insisted that Alpine Linux doesn't work because "Docker works properly only on Ubuntu." I tried to explain that it doesn't matter, as the Compose file doesn't require any Ubuntu-specific commands (it's just pulling images from Docker Hub), but they are insisting that I need to install Ubuntu or they won't proceed with the operations.
I'm so disheartened to see such closed-mindedness.

@stefano wauw.

@stefano Maybe he meant the base image used in the container? But even there, I would prefer Alpine over Ubuntu, unless there is a good reason not to.
Föderation EN Fr 11.10.2024 10:16:05
@snonux No, the base image is Debian. The mean the host...
Föderation EN Fr 11.10.2024 10:08:27
@stefano docker can run under vm?
Föderation EN Fr 11.10.2024 10:16:36
@maulanahirzan sure, I have many bhyve VMs with Alpine Linux (and Debian) and Docker
Föderation EN Fr 11.10.2024 10:08:45
@stefano Honestly - I can understand. I've seen production environments where every admin just fired up servers with distro he likes best. They had like 10 different (or more) Linux and BSDs, including different major versions, and so on.
And every time they had staff changes, some boxes were left orphaned with no maintainer. So it might be a reason behind the wish to use a certain distro, beside that argument they tried to give you.

@Reinald I can see the point, but I'll be the one managing the VM so there's no point in asking for a specific distribution

@stefano You might be the person right now. You might change your job, or be assigned to another team - or break your leg badly in skiing holiday, and be on sick leave for 3 months.
Organisations think different than individuals.

@stefano because Linux is Ubuntu and Ubuntu is Linux
