Lots-of-alone-time project update: I picked a bunch of willow yesterday because we have tons of it, and I started trying to make a basket after watching a bunch of youtube videos. Turns out...it's a bit harder than I guessed at first! But maybe I'll manage to make a couple of crappy baskets. We'll see...

I also learned that willow branches wobbling around in the air while I work (badly) with them is ABSOLUTELY irresistible to cats, who kept attacking the willows. Not helpful, guys!

A gloved hand holding a bunch of willow sticks in front of a patch of scrubby willow bushes in a snowy farm field.

A rather messy start to the bottom of a round basket. Looks sort of like a partially finished spiderweb built by a drunk spider. It's sitting on a hardwood floor with a bunch of willow branches scattered nearby.

I made a little progress on this willow basket...this is hard!

Doesn't help that my cats really badly want to chew on it.

A partially finished basked made of willow sticks. The base is looking pretty recognizable, at least. A grey cat is intensely sniffing the basket, getting ready to chomp on it, probably.

A side-view of the basket-in-progress. The base has a bunch of willow sticks sticking up from it that I'm starting to (badly) weave some more willows around. The grey cat is still trying to chew on the willow sticks.

I harvested a lot more willows today. The dogs were very helpful (well, they weren't unhelpful).

The cats, on the other hand, completely lost their minds when I brought the branches inside, and tried to destroy the world. Or at least the willow branches.

The goats were very happy to help clean up the leftover willow cuttings.

A bunch of cut willow sticks laying on the ground at the feet of a fluffy yellowish dog, who looks like he's guarding them. There's a bunch of winter-killed weeds and a bit of snow in the background.

A tied bunch of willow sticks lying on the shore of a frozen lake, with some dead trees in the background. 2 dogs are happily sniffing around, probably looking for frozen goose poop.

2 grey cats sitting on a wooden table while viciously attacking the tied bunch of willows leaning against a chair.

A chaotic mass of white, brown, and black goats all pushed together while they try to grab willow branches from my gloved hand.

Basket progress. Need to watch another video to see how to finish the edging.

A partially completed woven basket. There's a rock sitting in the centre for weight while working on it, and clippers on the ground next to it. All the "ribs" are sticking straight up into the air, need to figure out how to weave those next.

Basket finished!! (Despite the best efforts of the cats to sabotage everything)

It's got a lot of mistakes and a lot of gaps, but it's incredibly sturdy. I am pretty happy with it! Time to start another one!

A smug-looking grey cat sitting on a wooden table next to a finished willow basket that's about 3/4 as tall as the sitting cat.

Close-up of the willow basket. Definitely some inconsistencies in the weaving, but looks pretty ok overall!

If anyone else is interested in trying this, I used these two tutorials on youtube. Both are really great!

It's official, I'm addicted to a new hobby.

2 woven willow baskets sitting on a wooden table. There's a grey cat in the background who looks like he's trying to decide if he should try to sit in the baskets or not.
