CRD (youtube.com/CathodeRayDude, who is not on here i don't think) talked about weird utility software from the nineties having so much feature creep the defaults are so detached from what a regular user is expecting

and then you remember the vivaldi browser (@Vivaldi) seems to default to only loading images when you press a hotkey and it blasts you right back to utility software of the ninties

(either that or I accidentally toggled them off)

also, as an aside, Vivaldi is kinda weird? The browser's UI itsself is a Chrome extension. It's written in HTML and shows up in the inspector as an extension page with ID mpognobbkildjkofajifpdfhcoklimli

chrome's ui is written entirely as native code
firefox' UI is written in some XUL with left HTML
vivaldi is just, a react app, and takes 2 seconds longer to spin up a new window

it's so much "just a webpage" you can delete the extension

and it crashes on launch BUT you can delete all the HTML and you just get

a full page chrome 404 error

@tay Well, that's a bit like complaining that a car won't run after you've pulled out the engine... 🤪

Föderation · Di 11.07.2023 17:05:21

@Vivaldi not complaining at all! More to see what happens if you take the fuel out of a running engine :neofox_3c:

@tay If you like to play with the stuff, we recommend adding functionality instead of removing it. 😂

@tay That is true, and that's what makes it so unique: vivaldi.com/blog/vivaldi-brows
As for the longer window opening time, we are working on some improvements in this regard: vivaldi.com/blog/desktop/same-. To test it, get the latest Snapshot.
If you haven't heard about Snapshots, we've got you covered: vivaldi.com/blog/snapshot-vs-s 😉

@Vivaldi don't take me for being overly negative - out of the chromium browsers it's my favourite -- i even used to daily drive it back in 2016

i think my only real issue is that my philosophy is start simple, build up, but Vivaldi ships wit a lot of things enabled by default, which for a first time user can be somewhat overwhelming

Föderation · Di 11.07.2023 17:29:07

@Vivaldi what I mean by that is a stock Vivaldi install has 44 'things' on the screen all vying for the users attention, chrome has 22 and firefox has 18 (23 if you count the sponsored things).

@tay Thanks for the feedback. We're trying to show new users some of the things Vivaldi has to offer - many of which can be easily hidden or disabled. If you think we could improve anything, please consider submitting a feature request: help.vivaldi.com/desktop/troub. 🙂

Föderation · Di 11.07.2023 16:36:05

@tay Nope - that's not the default, and it never has been. Please go to Settings > Webpages > Load Images and make sure it's set to "Always" (that setting is also available from the Status Bar if you have it enabled).
You can also try resetting Webpage settings to default (you can find the button at the bottom of the Settings page).

@Vivaldi yeah idk what was going on 😅seems to be fine now?
