anyway it's kind of hard for me to see the value a program that has you wait over a year for a unit that is priced only slightly below the average open market rent

@tripofmice agreed. I asked the internet search, and it said to afford a month rent of $2,500 and be 'comfortable' you gotta make $100,000 a year. Eeeek

@morgan the area median income (AMI) here is $104,000, and some of the units are 100% or even 120% AMI, so they are available to people making that much money. But also... why? is this something the city is doing? and for whom?

Föderation EN Do 08.05.2025 04:48:21

@morgan I couldn't figure out what AMI this particular unit was though

Föderation EN Do 08.05.2025 05:11:26

@tripofmice is it rent controlled? I assume not, but I don't know the situation there. Guessing some well intentioned program that got amended into irrelevance

Föderation EN Do 08.05.2025 05:12:29

@jonbro it is, iirc all BMR units are rent controlled, but even if I'm misremembering, all buildings older than a certain year are rent controlled and this particular unit is in an old building

@tripofmice it’s similar in NYC, except the wait list runs into the thousands (tens of thousands?) and the apartments are similarly priced at slightly below market rate. I lucked out and got a rent stabilized apt outside the housing lottery through a friend of a friend.
