ALERT for Bluesky Bridge Users 🚨 πŸ¦‹

If you are using a Bluesky bridge on Mastodon, DO NOT TAG Mastodon accounts in your posts without prior informed consent from this person.

This could end up showing a preview of this person's profile picture and bio on Bluesky without their consent.

Additionally, be careful about how the upcoming Quote Post feature could behave with Bluesky bridges.

Some of us don't want our information shared with commercial platforms like Bluesky, and have not consented to this bridge.

This practice can even endanger some Fediverse users.

If you have chosen to share your
own data with commercial platforms, make sure you leave the same choice to others.

This is important.

If you are enabling an AI feature scanning all your emails, consider this will also scan the emails people have sent you. This information could include personal or otherwise legally protected information.

If this data leaks later (as it regularly happens with these systems), this could mean severe legal consequences for you down the road.

YOU are responsible for protecting the data of others under your custody.

This includes the messages and emails others send to you.

While most social media rely on commercial models harvesting users' data to sell to advertisers,

Mastodon offers a human-centric alternative that doesn't seek profits from your data and attention.

This means better social connections, better controls, and better privacy!

The first part of this article discusses privacy and security on Mastodon.

The second part is a tutorial to guide you in making the most of Mastodon's security and privacy related features.

This tutorial includes how to:

β€’ Enable multifactor authentication πŸ”‘πŸ”‘

β€’ Adjust privacy vs discovery πŸ‘€

β€’ Select post visibility and access :neocat_box:

β€’ Verify yourself :blobcatverified:

β€’ Delete and back up your data :nes_fire:

β€’ Block users and instances β›”

β€’ Opt out with hashtags #️⃣

β€’ Move from one instance to another πŸš€

I hope this helps you making the most of what Mastodon has to offers! :awesome:

Share in reply the products and companies you know that have taken a public stand against the AI hype,

And have promised not to integrate any AI in their products and services.

Age verification laws have been multiplying in recent years. This is extremely bad news for your privacy rights.

While framed as a measure to
protect the children, collecting more data on every users of the internet endangers *everyone*, including the children.

This isn't a protective measure,
this is authoritarian policies normalizing mass surveillance and silencing dissidents.

It could very much become
the end of pseudonymity online,
if we do not push back against it.

Tiny Mastodon Tip About Quote Posts :mastodon: πŸ“’

If your instance is already running the newly released version Mastodon 4.4,

Know that in preparation for the full implementation, the team has included a consent setting for the upcoming Quote Post feature.

While quoting a post will not
be available as a native feature until Mastodon 4.5 later this year, it's wonderful that you can adjust if you want in or not before it even arrives! :awesome:

HOW TO❓

1. From the web interface, go to "Preferences" on the right-side menu. Then click on "Other" under the "Preferences" section :blocky_white_cursor:

2. If your instance was newly updated, you should now see an option in "Posting Defaults" for "Who can quote" (see image below) πŸ‘‡

Note: If the option isn't there, your instance has not updated to the version including it yet. Be patient, it will likely be added in the weeks to come.

3. From the "Who can quote" drop-menu, you can choose either "Everyone", "Followers and mentioned users", or "Only mentioned users" :ablobcatnod:

4. Once the next version is released, you will be ready for Quote Posts! No matter your choices πŸ’ͺ

5. Enjoy the freedom of choosing the features you wish to participate in (or not)! 😌✨

For more information on Quote Posts, you can read Mastodon's announcement blog about it here: blog.joinmastodon.org/2025/02/

I really have zero spoon to deal with aggressive trolls these days.

If you jump in my replies to insult me or spread misinformation, I am going to block you.

Alternatively, if you think what you have to reply is neither kind nor funny nor constructive, maybe just don't say it.

If you want to criticize a privacy tool I recommended, maybe just post about this tool in your own posts and don't include me in this.

Thanks for reading my code of conduct policy. Em is tired.

Stop using Big Tech to organize your protests! They're part of the authoritarian surveillance and oppression as well.

✊ Replace Meetup/Facebook Groups with Mobilizon:
mobilizon.org

πŸ“„ Replace Google Docs with CryptPad:
cryptpad.fr

πŸ“ Replace Google Map with Organic Maps:
organicmaps.app

🎞️ Replace YouTube with PeerTube:
joinpeertube.org

πŸ“§ Replace Gmail and Google Calendar with Proton or Tuta:
proton.me
tuta.com

πŸ•ΈοΈ Create a simple html website with no tracking and no cookies, and post links to it everywhere, including paper posters and stickers.

We can organize without Big Tech. We have done it for centuries before! :blobcatyes:

It's important to protect our data online, and this is doubly true for anyone in the queer community.

But protecting our data shouldn't mean staying isolated.

It can be difficult to find a balance,
but it is fundamental to stay connected with our communities.

There are tools and practices that can help us with this.

Stay safe πŸ”’
But stay connected :rainbow_heart:
