Data Privacy is not just about privacy.

Data privacy is also about safety, about democracy, about diversity, about equality, about empathy, and, perhaps most important of all, about consent.

When you fight for privacy rights, you also fight for all of the above. You fight for a better freer and safer society for all.

@Em0nM4stodon Time and again, I find that people don't really "get" it. They would rather have convenience in a mutually exclusive way.

That's been a frustrating thing for me. I want to be able to do things more securely, use better apps for communication and stuff.

I can't even get my tech savvy friends to bother with it most of the time because we all know it would be impossible to get our non-tech savvy friends to use anything if there is any slight barrier to entry.

@dyamalos @Em0nM4stodon Sadly, tech companies that violate user privacy know this all too well.

@dyamalos @AAKL @Em0nM4stodon I tried writing a secure email system in 2015 and ran into the same thing. It worked fine but I could not get anyone to use it.

@mike805 @AAKL @Em0nM4stodon I remember back before Discord became popular my online group used Skype. We all hated it. It was too limited, started throwing ads at us, lagged a lot when Microsoft made it use their servers rather than be peer-to-peer.

A few of us thought about doing Vent or Teamspeak, but even though we had people who were willing to do the lifting of getting it setup, nobody wanted to bother installing another application and figuring out how to use it.

@dyamalos @mike805 @Em0nM4stodon It's interesting that you put it that way, given the popular reaction to AI apps that we have seen. Then again, the same nonchalant attitude explains the utter cluelessness toward what these apps actually do.

@AAKL @mike805 @Em0nM4stodon Ai is impressive for what it can do.

The issue is neural nets are basically more magic than usual programming to a lot of people, even some who are in tech. It is quite literally a black box that takes input and outputs.

The output may be fine, or it could be complete crap, but most people do not know enough to determine which.

It's also less the people doing AI and more companies using it as the new buzzword, just like blockchain was the "new thing" 5-10 years ago. At least AI does have some use cases besides scams.

Most of the AI products today are a more complicated way to do things that were already being done, but worse or hyper invasions of privacy/security holes.

@dyamalos @mike805 @Em0nM4stodon So in a nutshell, it boils down to ignorance and the exploitation of ignorance. It's an old tactic and it favors the masses. I'm not sure you can undo it.

@dyamalos @AAKL @Em0nM4stodon
Privacy is kind of a compromise, there are a few things you can do to work around & meeting people in the middle
may strike an adequate balance
Even if you can't convince people to switch I think just using the tools and casually bringing it up in conversation and it's perks will set a precedent
Admittedly though its getting more difficult to assess a threat model considering the uncertain direction of our world
