By default, Mastodon accounts automatically accept new followers.

However, if you would like to screen who follows you, you can switch your account over to manual confirmation. On the manual setting, anyone who tries to follow you will appear as a follow request which you can confirm or reject.

More info on how to do this (and lots of questions answered about this) in the guide at:

On some interfaces you may see a 🔒 icon next to accounts with manual confirmation.

@FediTips

I never request to follow anyone. If that’s on, I figure they don’t want to be in my feed and click away.

@Kirsty

This is a good point, I'll add a section to the guide about it.

It can vary, some people are happy to get followers but are trying to screen out spammers etc.

If they have requetsts switched on, you can often find out what their follower preferences are in their profile description.

@FediTips you can also check new followers and if you’re not happy block them which will remove the follow and then if you want, unblock them
